Apr 29, 2018 · Walking without a hip joint in Bones, Joints & Muscles

To whom it may concern: It has been brought to my attention that by me encouraging others and having an amputation that I may be making staph infection look like a walk in the park or that I was hiding my outcome. After 5 THR failing due to infection I ELECTED to have an amputation. I did not have an amputation because the doctor said it was my only option….I did it because I was never going to have a chance at another THR and at 35 I wanted more options, so by having the amputation I will hopefully have good luck with a prosthetic leg. I was on here simply to encourage others to keep fighting, not because I think numerous surgeries are the way to go. Anyways I really hope you all do well. Again I am sorry for offending anyone

@bjg883 well I know how you feel but unfortunately the doctors do what is best for your health vs. what would make our lives easier. I went 4+ years without a hip because I had 4 THRs fail due to infection and they told me the best thing to do was to leave it out as long as possible. The longer you can go without infection the better your chances will be for a successful reimplantation. Now nothing is guaranteed obviously… even after leaving mine our for four year #5 still got infected and they had to remove it and said that I was no longer a candidate for THR because my body would basically reject it. Obviously my case is rare but it does happen and i'm only 35. Have you applied for disability?? Some state programs pay for someone to come into your home and help you so your spouse could work. I was lucky enough to still be able to walk without a hip (at 1 yr. post op) plus I was already on disability (because it has been going on for 12 years)

Apr 29, 2018 · What kind of mobility can I expect with an antibiotic spacer in my hip in Joint Replacements

@janelaine is this your 2nd THR? 3rd? Did the same surgeon do both? Mayo Clinic?? Sorry just curious lol My last infection was fungal VRE. The previous 4 infections were all staph or MRSA. Surprisingly the VRE fungal infection took me the longest to get rid of. I really hope they are able to save your new hip!!! It's so stressful and trying to go through it time and time again. My story is a rare one because I actually had 5 THR (over the course of 12 years) fail to infection and when they took #5 out I was no longer a candidate for future THRs. If for some reason this hip fails for you and you are not a current Mayo patient I encourage you to check into getting an appointment with them. They really are amazing and gave me every possible chance for success….my body just had other plans.

@janelaine so glad to hear your new hip is doing well!!!! Non weight bearing status is so hard to do but it is extremely beneficial when you have had problems in the past. I am also glad your ID doctor is doing the 3 month antibiotic regimen…it helped me more than once. Your pain is probably more intense because this is not the first time they have been in their messing around. I can't remember were you a hip spacer or no hip?? Praying for complete healing for you and hopefully this hip is the best one!!!!!!

@mrfish sorry to hear about the c diff issues and I haven't been on here this year because I actually spent December-March at Mayo Clinic with my 5th infected hip ;( but I am back home now and I am so happy to hear things are going relatively well for you!! I bet you are more than happy to not have that spacer in anymore?!?!?! They aren't fun but they are better than not having hardware at all lol keep me updated on your progress and I am happy you are walking without an assistive device!!!

@froggy1 I hope and pray your next surgery goes as planned! Time is on your side because you have left it out for a year +. I had 5 total hips and can completely relate.

@hipless there is possibility that you will be able to do stairs however unless you have a lot of upper body strength and can hold you weight to advance to the next step it will probably be 6 months to a year before you can bear weight on it. Some people never can. I was lucky enough to be able to and in fact i walked on my no hip leg at about 1 yr post op. I also lost my hip to infection..actually 5 times. My story is very rare though. My body just rejected every one. I hope and pray you are able to get another hip and keep it. If you have any questions let me know…unfortunately have been through it enough to be an expert lol

@hipnohip I will be praying it all works out for him! Infection is a horrible thing. The longer he can go without it and without infection the better.
