Sat, Mar 7 6:57pm · Seniors with Medicare, is Mayo worth the hassle? in Visiting Mayo Clinic

Hi. I just spoke with Mayo in Jacksonville yesterday and I still cannot get an appointment in the GI department. I asked if there might be a possibility at Mayo in Phoenix and they didn’t know. I live in Jax and I don’t have confidence in the other facilities here to treat my gastroparesis. The Nissan Fundaplication from 5 years ago is failing and I have another hiatal hernia. Medicare is my primary insurance and I also have BlueCross BlueShield. Mayo doesn’t want Medicare patients. I am just trying to manage on my own. No medical care is better than poor medical care. I hope you are successful in getting Mayo to take you.

I had nissen fundiplication in 2015 for hiatal hernia repair. Apparently the vagus nerve was damaged and after gastric emptying test I was diagnosed with gastroparesis. This is a life changing disease for which there is no cure. I continue to try to manage it and some days are better than others.

I got gastroparesis after hiatal hernia repair surgery. I believe the vagus nerve was damaged during surgery. I understand that acupunture can be helpful. I haven’t tried it but I plan to. I still struggle every day with nausea and gas pains. Some days are better than others. I take Zolfran for nausea and sometimes it works quite well and other times not so much.

I have gastroparesis after hiatal hernia repair surgery (nissen fundaplication). I take zolfran as needed for the stomach pain. I also get some relief from gasX. I am very careful about my diet. I avoid any raw fruit or vegetables. I also try to eat a low fat and low fiber diet. I have low energy and depression as a result of this disease. It has changed my life. I used to travel extensively but now I am limited because of dietary needs. I have learned to live with this but it is a challenge!

Have you pursued medical malpractice against the surgeon?

Yes, I had food poisoning and of course could not throw up. Gastroparesis is a terrible disease and it is very difficult to get a doctor to listen. If they can’t fix something surgically, they aren’t interested.

I have gastroparesis as a result of the Nissen Fundoplication. I have considerable difficulty with gas and bloating as well as nausea. My diet is limited and even when I am careful I still have problems sometimes. Also, being on a very low fiber diet has created constant constipation problems. This disease has changed my life.
