CREST-2 is actively enrolling participants with narrowing in their carotid artery without stroke or stroke warning signs (TIAs or mini-strokes) caused by that artery for a research study. The study is comparing intensive medical management alone to intensive medical management used in combination with a procedure to remove plaque buildup from the carotid artery in the neck. Dr. Brott and his colleagues working on the CREST-2 study want to know if medicine is as safe and effective as surgery or stenting in preventing a stroke caused by the buildup of plaque in the carotid artery. To find the answer, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) has awarded a multimillion dollar grant to fund this seven-year clinical trial that will enroll 2,480 patients in 120 centers in the U.S. and Canada.

How would you suggest dealing with radiation induced carotid artery stenosis in head and neck cancer patients? I am particularly interested in accurate diagnosis and early prevention and treatment options. I had an ultrasound procedure that showed early signs of blockage. I presented to my primary care physician symptoms of ischemic stroke. The kicker for me was when I temporarily lost vision in one eye. Information available to me is limited as to what point I should pursue intervention. I don't want to wait on another incident and risk permanent damage, but my PC, Vascular Surgeon, and my Neurologist have all said there is nothing to worry about.
