Your experience with tooth extraction while getting Bevacizumab

Posted by charlotte12 @charlotte12, Jun 27 7:56am

I have a decayed tooth, the lymph node near by is swollen, no pain from the tooth, the tooth can not be saved and needs to be extracted, this medication, bevacizumab also called Avastin may increase the risk of poor healing - I don't want to stop the use of this medication.
Have you had a tooth extraction while continue taking Avastin?
How was your experience?

what was the explanation of your doctor? Did you delay your cancer treatment?

That it can cause excessive bleeding with tooth extractions she was at the point of adding the Avastin to my current regime of carboplatin for maintenance.

in the meantime I checked with the dentist, he needs to
look at the meds I'm getting and the blood count before
he will schedule an appointment-

That sounds like a good plan he may have to also talk with your oncologist

the oral surgeon is waiting for the oncologist's response. In the meantime the dentist is out of office for a week and I will
have my 3rd treatment next week-
I wished I had taken care of that tooth before Covid -
I live in an area where I found it difficult to get good dental
care.

I hope you're not in a lot of pain hoping and your able to get it taken care of soon when I had mine taken care of my onc prescribed antibiotics to take the day of but the dentist also prescribes them after an extraction for 7 days.

What happened with me is they- the oncology team paused the treatment bevacizumab/ avastin while I had root canal treatment done - there was no significant trauma to the area during the procedure - I decided to take it as a body break for me but I’ll question the need for such a pause when I next meet my oncologist.

thanks for your reply, how long is the pause for avastin? I'm waiting to
get an appointment with the dentist to evaluate the current status of the tooth. How many chemo treatments did you have when they stopped the avastin, how soon after the avastin was stopped did you have your root canal, and when are your getting avastin again? Did the CBC look different
after avastin was stopped?
