Really bad allergies. Why does my head hurt so much?

Posted by mercedes713 @mercedes713, Jun 2, 2025

I have really bad allergies and I have been experiencing headaches from them for 2 months now. This is the first year that my allergies have been this bad and Flonase and Claritin barely do anything. I thought my headaches would start to go away by now, since it is June, but they haven’t. I have been experiencing headaches almost every day, as well as neck pain, sinus congestion, eye pain, dizziness and costochondritis from all of this. I have been to the doctor several times as well. First they gave me antibiotics for a sinus infection. They worked for a few days, but then the symptoms came right back. I went back and they said it was probably just allergies. My headaches got a little better a week ago, but then came right back again. I have been experiencing headaches all day and feel tight pressure all around my sinuses and head. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas to try and help with my symptoms? I have an appointment with an ENT in a month or so and a follow up physician appointment. I have been told so far whole wheat locally sourced bread could help? I also thought about acupuncture. I am very worried because I hope these headaches aren’t something else more serious like a tumor, or that they don’t become chronic. I also hope I get a bit better soon. Thank you for reading🙏 peace and love

Hi @mercedes713,

I totally understand how frustrating and overwhelming persistent headaches can be. I was in a similar situation where I had ongoing headaches that wouldn’t go away despite trying many treatments. What really helped me was exploring headache surgery as an option.

I found a lot of useful information and support at Headache Surgery, which helped me learn about surgical options for certain types of headaches that don’t respond well to medication. After consulting with specialists, I underwent a procedure that significantly reduced my headaches and improved my quality of life.

Of course, every case is different, but it might be worth looking into if your current treatments aren’t giving you relief. Wishing you all the best and hoping you find the help you need soon!

Hi @mercedes123 - wondering how the headaches are lately? Also wondering what you learned from your visits with the ENT and your follow up physician appointment?

@lisalucier Hi! Thank you so much for asking, I appreciate it. < 3 I am doing a lot better now than I was in the spring and early summer. I think the allergy season has gotten better and my headaches are much more manageable now! I hope you are doing okay, too!

I’m sorry for mix up, it was nurtec my insurance denied. I am currently taking butalb-acetamin-caff every 4 hours and just got phone call that insurance approved infusion so I’ll be getting that on Wednesday. Please pray for me, this pain is unbearable.

@sarawiet - no worries. There is a whole alphabet jungle out there of medications.

Really sorry to hear your pain is unbearable. That is awful.

Hurray that your infusion got approved!

Is the butalb-acetamin-caff every 4 hours helping at all? Does anything else you do or choose not do help temper the pain at all?

@lisalucier I’m in migraine pain everyday:( I was prescribed Zyrtec and it dulled pain but insurance decided to not not cover, so I am now on something every four hours. Idk I feel like the pain is never going to stop. It’s so frustrating!

@sarawiet - really sorry to hear you're pain feels as if it is never going to stop. I don't know what location you are in or insurance program you may have, but my insurance has not covered cetirizine hydrochloride (Zyrtec) in many years. I've been purchasing it over the counter at a drug store or online for a long time. I get the generic, so while it still has a cost, it's not a huge cost like a brand name inhaler, and it really helps me.

Do you have the ability to get the cetirizine hydrochloride you mentioned dulled your pain? Have you found any other things you can do or take that help you with the headaches when you get them?

That was me! Worried I had a brain tumor. Finally after seeing an ENT, he said my sinuses were fine. That exam doesn't show other parts of the brain but my headaches started to get better as allergy seasons changed.

Hey There! I can honestly say, this has been the worst spring I have ever had for allergies. I was sick for 5 weeks
with sinusitis, chronic terrible sinus headaches/migraines, ashtmatic bronchitis and allergic rhinitis. The tree & grass pollens have been extremely heavy this year.

I still can't go outside even for 15 minutes that I don't have issues still. Oak & Grass Pollens still. Go to Pollen.com and log in in your zip code and it will give you the pollen count in your area. It seems oak pollen is still high here.

I use Flonase & Astepro in the morning and then 2.5 ml of Chidren's zyrtec. This seems to help. I drink lots of
water to help thin the mucous. I take Vitamin D3+K2, Vitamin C, Vitamin B2 & I get B12 injections for my
immune system. Please ask your doctor before trying these.

Try a teaspoon of local honey as this helps some people with allergies I have been told.

Try and get off sugar as this increases and aggravates inflammation.

Praying for you as I know how miserable this is. Blessings...

Chew Sugar free cinnamon gum also. Makes mucus in throat go away.
