Why do breast lumps grow rapidly?

Posted by elizabeth357 @elizabeth357, Feb 3 12:05pm

Hello everyone, my name is Elizabeth from Mississauga, Canada and I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer(Ductal cancer). But I have noticed that the lump has been growing really first right after the biopsy, and right now it’s grown I think from the size of 3cm to a size I think is now bigger, and it feels hot, heavy and painful. I had my first meeting with the surgeon last Friday, and since then it has still enlarged, and I haven’t started on the treatment yet. My first Nuclear Bone test is in 3weeks, but I worry what will become of me before then, and I have a couple of more tests before the treatment starts. Please help me understand what I can ask for or do at this point.

Thank you very much.

Elizabeth.

This sounds concerning and needing attention. Did the surgeon notice it on Friday? Did you mention your concerns? If it was me, I'd try and see a doctor sooner than three weeks. You might consider asking for an appointment with oncology practice/surgeon. That way, if it requires immediate action you'll get it and if not you'll have a bit more peace of mind in the next 3 weeks. I hope you get the info you need.Check back in and update us?

Thank you very much. Yes I raised it with the surgeon, but on Friday it wasn’t as alarming as now, but I have sent her an email raising these concerns. Thank you so much once again for this reply, it gives me a start🙏🏾

@elizabeth357 You said you have your biopsy already. Well in my case the biopsy caused pain , Inflammation and a huge bruise that didn’t disappeared so fast. Actually for my surgery I still had some inflammation and pain. Maybe that’s your case as well …

Hello @angiemal , i think you are right. Because the swelling and pain all started right after the biopsy, that was like 3weeks ago, until now. And last night it was worse, i hardly slept. Last week my family doctor gave me antibiotics and painkillers, which seemed to work in the first 3days. But since sunday, its become a whole different story. This morning i got scheduled for an MR scan tomorrow, let me try to hold on until then. Thank you so much dear 🙏🏾.

I put a lot of ice with a towel in the anrea and that definitely was helpful!

I don’t know how many of you do this - but I take a photo and send it to the doctor through the patient portal. Photos of my breasts, bruised or swollen or rash, have been seen by any staff on my care team that has access to my portal. But, oh well. It’s been very helpful and can get immediate attention. When my breast was swollen the surgeon had me come in the next day after seeing the photo. Extra bruising shown on a photo? they said it appeared normal but gave me specific things to watch out for in case it got worse.

I’m 70 so I figure, really, who cares about viewing a 70 year old breast?! But for you younger women, just edit it down to only show the issue you need to share. It’s faster than trying to get an appointment and they can immediately see the problem.

@triciaot , thank you very much for this piece of advice. I think it would really grab the care team’s attention. So two days ago I went to the ER and had an ultrasound scan done, the Dr thought it could be an infection, but the scan didn’t show anything like that, then the following day I was scheduled in for an MRI, which I’m did yesterday but one, but to be honest, I’m afraid to look at the results which were sent last night because my mental state is really unstable right now given the fact that this all new for me, and dealing with so many other family issues🤦🏽‍♀️. So I decided to wait for Monday for when I’m supposed to see the oncologist. Please tell me I’m being crazy not to look at the results 😟.

You are under no obligation to look at the results. I know people who wait to talk to their doctor and some who prefer to look at results when they appear in portal. Really there is no right or wrong. Just pace yourself depending on what works for you. Take care!

@elizabeth357 I totally understand being in an unstable mental state! It’s all so overwhelming and if you have other issues going on, especially with loved ones, it can just be too much. You’re not crazy!
Take care of yourself. Even if you looked at the results you couldn’t do anything about it without the doctor, so waiting until Monday is very reasonable.
Give yourself a hug for all you’ve done right. Getting the US and MRI done. Scheduling with the oncologist. You’re that much closer to solving the problem. I wish for you that there is a simple answer!
