Which is the best statin to lower cholesterol

Posted by bigjohnscho @bigjohnscho, 1 day ago

I suffer from PN and stopped my simvastatin some years ago but my cholesterol has slowly crept up to a worrying level. My GP wants to put me on Avorstatin but Iam sure this could make my PN worse. Has anyone experienced the same problem and is there a statin that is proven not to affect or worsen Peripheral Neuropathy.

Hello,
My best suggestion is to ask your doctor about non statin cholesterol medication. They are available. My doctor just put me on one after she told me to stop the statin version last February.
Wishing you the best.
Take care and have a serene weekend ahead,
gus

I've been taking pravastatin and a high dose of gabapentin for years, I seriously doubt that my doctor would prescribe them together if it made my neuropathy worse than it already is.

@bigjohnscho
I could not take statins .. neuropathy and other pains were worsened with statins. I did not have high cholesterol. I had high triglycerides. Eating less fat .. especially the bad ones helped me get my numbers to middle range. I eat lean meats, very little fried foods .. hard to give up what was a way of eating. Because of stomach and esophagus problems I have to eat easy to swallow and digest foods.

Eat slowly and savor .. enjoy eating every bite you eat. Don't be destracted while eating with the tv or a tablet, etc. Read labels and check out diet suggestions on how to lower cholesterol. Use your browser's search engine.

Lowering cholesterol and triglycerides can be done without medication.

I was happily taking Crestor before my stroke 2 months ago, but now on Atorvastatin because doc said it's best for post-stroke. Who knew?!?

I could not take a statin after I got severe vertigo. My endocrinologist took it off and suggested I buy whole flax seeds and grind 1tsp and take it at least once a day with a meal or a smoothie, etc.

I'd recommend looking for a naturopathic doctor. There isn't a naturopathic doctor near me, so I had to do my own research and make my own decisions:(.
In 1.5 months, I got my total cholesterol to drop 50 "points" and my LDL to drop 40 "points", by changing my diet, alone.
There were a lot of recommendations in my Naturalpathic Medicine book. I didn't follow them all, but picked the ones that "suited" me.
I now take the following:
1 T of organic flaxseed oil/day (mix 4 T flaxseed oil, 2 T rice vinegar, 1 T soy sauce, top with toasted sesame seeds and eat with veggies.)
300 mg/da Kyolic garlic pill
2 g/da Vit C
2 organic walnuts (broken into pieces)/da on my breakfast cereal (the more walnuts the better, but they are expensive)
12+ organic raisins/day on my breakfast cereal
I also minimized or eliminated butter, sugar, and baked goods from the bakery departments of Safeway, Costco, Walmart, etc.
Good luck.
