What should I discuss / ask my PCP about?

Posted by aaron_az @aaroncush, Mar 14, 2023

I have an appointment Monday with my Mayo PCP as my pain is becoming less controlled. For background, Mayo Phoenix neurology department already declined to take my case so it is my PCP or bust right now. Topics right now are medical marijuana, LDN, and high-dose steroids. What other things should I ask about?

@aaroncush, I know from reading most of your posts that you have tried a lot of different complementary and alternative treatments. Have you thought about or considered the Mayo Pain Rehabilitation Center? Just wondering if it might be helpful to discuss with your PCP as an option. It has helped a lot of different members where other treatments failed.

Hi John,
My personal view is going to a pain clinic without a definitive diagnosis is a waste of time and money. Mayo Neurology in AZ declined my case and suggested the pain clinic 2.5 years ago. I flatly refuse to take gabapentin and the like after having had them for a different problem and hating how they made me feel. I cannot meditate my way out of this pain, Mayo acupuncture didn't help either. You cannot nerve block my entire left side either as that is sadly my better side. All I can say is my condition is progressing. Feel free to tell me of some other magic the pain clinic can do.

Well as an update she ordered more bloodwork, said no to higher dose steroids, cannot give me a medical cannabis form (said I need to find a random doctor who does those things 😢), but did give me a prescription for LDN. She is also pushing again for a neuro consult but there is little to be had of relevant value at Mayo AZ.

I will. My neuropathy is inflammatory in nature so keep that in mind. It will be a slow ramp up of dosage once the compounding pharmacy makes the prescription.

What strength are you going to start, for how long, and so on?
Hope it'll help!
Thank you! 😊

I will start at 1.5 mg and see how it goes with the plan to gradually go to 3 mg and eventually 4.5 mg if necessary. The paper I shared with my doctor also spurred her to order some interesting tests and try for another neuro consult.
