What is SIDS?

I know what it stands for but I'm not sure what the causes and effects are. Over the weekend one of my friends had a 3 month old son who died with it.

That is tragic--I am so sorry.
Some causes are now known but SIDS is still mysterious. It may be an immature pulmonary system in the infant. Stomach sleeping can be a co-factor, as is cold weather...also air pollution and old-fashioned coal heating. It is rarer than it was, but still terrible. It is in no way anyone's fault, or completely preventable. Condolences to your friend.

Some causes are now known but SIDS is still mysterious. It may be an immature pulmonary system in the infant.
