What helps with debilitating back pain from esophageal cancer?

Posted by mintman @mintman, Mar 27 7:47pm

My husband’s cancer is located at the junction. The pain in his back is excruciating. He has been laying on a heating pad, using ice packs and lidocaine patches to try to get some relief. Now he has to use oxycodone every 4 hours. What else can offer him some relief?

I never had back pain throughout my GE Junction cancer. I'm not sure that this is a usual side effect. What are the doctors saying about it? I will offer prayer.

He tends to be the rare one… his junction cancer is squamous cell which usually presents higher in the esophagus.

My husband bought one of those Velcro back braces things that people use at work when doing heavy lifting. He sleeps in it and it seems to help quite a bit.

I don't know if my back complaint is a similar condition to that unfortunately experienced by others, but it certainly is aggravating. My stomach/esophagus junction is completely blocked and although I will hack water back up in fairly short order, sipping ice water is something of a guilty pleasure for me. Not pleasurable, however, is a resulting "dull prodding ache" I experience in my lower back after a few sips. I strain to find a comfortable position as I'm receiving nutrition through a J-tube and the ache gradually subsides over a several minute span. I've just started my chemo/radiation series and I'm wondering if this aggravation will change, hopefully for the better.

The very best results I've had was from THC edibles. It's the only thing that gives me any relief from the Neropathy and lower back pain. My surgery was yesterday and team says results are very positive! God's will!

This sounds exactly like my husband’s experience. He’s taking oxycodone but they added a fentanyl patch. It makes him loopy! Still looking for a better solution.

First thought--sounds like pretty heavy pharmaceutical weaponry for something that (at least) for me is more a relatively minor aggravation. Hope you and yours find answer(s). Best wishes.
