What about men and Osteoporosis?

Very interesting article in the New York Times this morning.

Not able to view the NY Times article without signing in or creating an account. It may be interesting but I would really like to see what the research is behind the article. Does the article have a medical or science based reference? Can you share the link?

I am a male, age 66. The word "osteoporosis" was never mentioned to me by any doctor when getting annual checkups. I looked fine, I was athletic, I worked out. Then I had a fracture at 64 which wasn't from a fall, and even the orthopedist (!) didn't say "hmm, that's suspicious, you should have a bone density test." Nope. Only my primary care doctor brought it up when I told him about the fracture.

I see a number of old men walking around with stooped shoulders, and I bet most of them *still* don't know they have osteoporosis. It's just "aging" as far as they are concerned.

@njx58 thank you so much for sharing your story and I am so sorry you had to fracture for this to be revealed. I worry about my husband and the other men in my life whom I care about.

@gravity3 Thanks! Men need to realize that this isn't just something old ladies get.

And, as people here know, the challenge is to find a doctor who knows the score. My PCP just said "take Fosamax and get a DEXA in two years." Wow - apart from doing nothing at all, that would have been the worst thing I could have done! That's when I decided to contact Dr. McCormick as well as an experienced endocrinologist.

P.S. as I've posted before, Tymlos is helping me a lot, and yesterday I ran a 5K race. 🙂

@njx58 if you don't mind me asking how old were you when you were diagnosed with osteoporosis and what were your T-scores? How long can you take Tymlos for, is it a pill or injection?
