Was that necessary?

Posted by januaryjane @januaryjane, 3 days ago

I'll keep the subject simple. And don't judge grammar and all that, my brain is fish food at the moment.

I've been trying to figure out for six months why I keep getting sick.
I saw my dr last week to do another test and got results, now needing another test.
As I went to schedule, the receptionist was trying to book with a different doctor.
I said, can't I just see my dr. ..?
Apparently Friday is their last day and I was a little dumbfounded.
No one, not even the dr said one word. Super confused.
Of course the receptionist said she didn't know a thing about it. But then I asked where they were going. Oh a little closer to where they live, she replied.

How hard is it to tell someone you're leaving their current practice? Especially when Im in the middle of this mystery.
People move, whatever, not offended by that at all, just the fact that I was blindsided.

Truly, is this how it is now?
Nothing like that slap in the face to make you feel like just a time slot....

Januaryjane, I am so sorry that happened to you. I usually get a letter in the mail informing me that my
doctor is retiring or leaving the practice.

I've never heard of anyone being secretive about leaving the practice.

Perhaps you need to find another doctor group.

Blessings & Prayers....

Happens all the time here in E Tennessee. Drs leave and we get a “Dear Patient” letter in the mail, usually after the fact. We get handed off to another Dr we know nothing about.
Sorry for your experience but you are definitely not alone.

Simply, we used to live in a time of civility, empathy, concern, and accountability.
Now it's whatever you can get away with, take the money and run.
Not to be political because this goes for all sides, but maybe the Clinton years set a new tone for the country: wealth from deception with no consequences for criminality, just investigations. The Boy Scouts? The Church? 2008 crash too big to fail.
Don't take it personally, it's the (post modern) times we are living in. Let's continue being civil and caring.🙏

I have a different "Was that necessary?" I happen to be 90 years old and fairly healthy. I absolutely hate it when people look at me and say "You don't look 90 years old." I used to just laugh, but now I look them in the eye and ask "What do you think 90 should look like?" The look on their faces is absolutely priceless. And, of course, the usual "Are you still driving?" If I am not in a wheelchair, do not have dementia and standing there talking to them like a normal person, why shouldn't I be driving? In fact I probably drive better than they do. Thanks for letting me vent.

Love it! Good for you! Manners are out the door. The younger adults just saying anything they think. This country has lost its empathy and common sense. I would have loved to see you at the time this happened!! I am outspoken and do not take disrespect..unless it is just ignorant and I give them the look..LOL

I know, I'm looking for another provider currently. I've gotten those letters too, it's just about decency.

@januaryjane This also happens where I live in Michigan. I realize that receptionists and schedulers are often not allowed to tell you where the medical provider is going. It could be a non-compete clause in their contract (very common here) or some other reason. If the doctor is still local I'd really like to know. So, I will ask around and local gossip will fill in the blanks for me.

It is possible that your doctor wasn't "allowed" to tell patients that he was leaving and where he was going. This is an unfortunate business model that has nothing to do with patient care. If this were me, I'd ask about why no one informed you. More out of curiosity than anything else.

Thank you and sorry you experience this too. This day and age providers just don't seem to be investing much in individual patients. It's a shame

Yes I understand to a certain point some receptionists may not be able to say anything. But Im just confused why they have the power to schedule, but be able to leave someone high and dry. It's unprofessional to say in the least.
Im not sure, at this point I feel done with this office. I have one last appointment with them and have thought about bringing it up but Im torn.
I try to communicate but I just can't stand not being honest. A waste of my time, nothing will be done about it anyway.

@januaryjane Crazy, I know, but this just happened to me. My PT left the clinic after many years of treating me. Even though he gave his employers 30 days notice, his contract with them did not allow him to tell his patients or referring docs until 10 days before his departure. Neither is his staff is allowed to tell any of us where he is going. . I will try his senior partner, and if that fails, use my detective skills to track him down.

Such is the world of medi-business.
