Waiting for Acceptance/Denial

Posted by doglover007 @doglover007, May 15 10:26am

Yesterday, I filled out my questionnaire for internal medicine/consultative medicine. I had done research prior to contacting Mayo to know that Internal Medicine is a very difficult area to be accepted into but I decided at the suggestion of the admission consultant (who was incredibly kind) to go ahead and apply even if the likelihood of being turned down is more likely than not.

I decided after making the decision of what department to apply to I would do no more research before sending in the questionnaire because I had done tons and tons of research beforehand and realized that anymore would only make me question myself and give inauthentic answers and I want to if at all possible be as authentic and truthful as possible even if I don't get an appointment in this department.

Unfortunately, after I sent in the questionnaire I immediately started researching again and discovered that the symptom I chose as my main concern seems to be one that people claim Mayo doesn't like to address. So now I'm stuck in this cycle of did I do the right thing? Should I have chosen a different main concern even though this truly is my main concern and what affects me most and what my home doctors are baffled about the most?

I guess my question is how do people deal with limbo of waiting to see if Mayo accepts them for an appointment? I don't have high hopes but yet I have some. My quality of life is so so low as I know so many people's are that apply to Mayo. I feel like I have no more right to be seen than anyone else but yet....I want help badly.

The waiting is hard but so is continuing to live like this. How do I reconcile the waiting? And if denied how do I reconcile that this is not my answer?

Well, now I am intrigued….exactly what symptom is it that people claim Mayo does not like to address?

Hi @doglover007 ! This process is so stinkin’ stressful, right? It helps me to focus on what I know.

I want to let you know what I hear you saying in your post:
You completed the questionnaire process. Kudos!
You did your research, got feedback from a representative of the source. Yay!
You provided information representing exactly where you are at right now. The best way to address your needs!

You mention baffling your doctors at home with what affects you most. Do you mind sharing what you are dealing with and how it is affecting you?

You’ve come to the right place and will find much kindness here.

@doglover007, you have taken the first step in requesting an appointment at Mayo Clinic by filling out the questionnaire. As a next step, the appointment coordinator will arrange a time to talk with you by phone according to the availability your provided in the questionnaire. When you talk with a appointment coordinator, you can discuss in more detail your symptoms, conditions and which department might be right for you.
