Very weak legs after L3/S1 decompression and fusion
I had L3/S1 decompression and L4/L5 fusion three weeks ago. I still have very weak legs. I use a walker and most of my weight is on the walker when I move around the house. Really bad in the morning. My wife has to use gait belt with me 100% of the time as my legs occasionally get rubbery. Messages with doctor and PA don’t indicate any concern. Just need time and continued walking exercise. Anyone else experience this?

I had lumbar fusion some time ago. After surgery I did not have trouble walking but did need Physical Therapy for dry-needling to break up surgical scars and relieve that pain, and to rebuild strength and proper posture. You might ask your Dr and PA about targeted PT. Good luck.

2 ReactionsI’m anxious for PT to start. Doctor said I need to wait 6 weeks post op for outpatient PT. I’m seeing his PA in a couple of days, maybe he’ll prescribe PT earlier.
@pikemike I had l5-s1 with a disc replacement and they said I would have no PT. I am 6 month last week and doing great. Their thinking is everyday use and walking is enough PT. Now what I am looking forward to is light weights but sounds like that will be at the one year mark. Research has me seeing people that had this done with a orthopedic surgeon instead of a Neurosurgeon are put in the PT for make more money using their Physical Therapist.
