Using moisturizer on knee

Posted by doll53 @doll53, Sep 5, 2023

I’m 8 weeks out from TKR. I have no scabs on my incision. At 3 weeks my doctor told me not to put any lotions ON the incision. My skin is so dry I’m wondering if it’s ok to rub some Cetaphil on my knee and over the scar. It sometimes feels like my skin is going to rip open. I know it’s not, but feel like some moisturizer would make it more supple. Think that’s ok?

Hello,
I have had both knees replaced, 21 weeks out on the right side and 14 weeks on the left side. I have been using the lotion in the picture since I was 4 weeks out on both knees. I bought this lotion off of Amazon. It has helped me quite a bit. Hope this helps.

My TKR surgery was 14 months ago. I was told by my physical therapist to rub Vitamin E on my incision. I bought Vitamin E gelcaps and took a pin/needle and made a hole in the gelcap. Then I squeezed the liquid out onto my incision and rubbed it in. I then used regular body lotion on my leg, carefully avoiding the incision. It worked! I have a very light scar, that's it.

After a couple of weeks, my surgeon told me to use lotion and massage the area with it once or twice a day. He said that would reduce the scarring and decrease sensitivity on it. In the early postop period, I used Palmer's cocoa butter and vitamin E formula, as this was recommended to me by a surgeon colleague years ago. I have had several surgeries and used it on my incision sites/scars with good results. I have suggested it to other people who have had surgery and they likewise reported good results.

If you have a patient portal to contact the surgeon, you might send him a message and write what you described to us. He should have suggestions about how to take care your knee. Best of luck to you!

I used Bio Oil when I had mine done and my scars are practically nonexistent. I never had any problem doing so.

I started using NOW brand oil of frankincense that is blended with jojoba oil. It helped a lot with tightness and burning nerve pain that I had. After reading more about several oils, many are anti inflammatories and the jojoba and frankincense are good for your skin.
