Urostomy with bladder left in: When will the bleeding stop?

Posted by lcathey @lcathey, Mar 22 2:03am

Seven days ago I had a Urostomy surgery with the bladder left in. I had experienced heavy bleeding as a result of radiation for prostrate cancer. Was in the hospital multiple times to have the bladder flushed plus several cystoscopes which did not help. Now I am still passing blood and large blood clots from the bladder. I've been told this will stop when the bladder heals. Has anyone else had this problem. ( I am a male age 77)

I had similar situation. Now 63 yo
2014 Radical Prostatecomy followed by salvation radiation creating the Radiation cystitis, bladder neck bleed and surgery to cauterize. Fistulas and lymphoceles continued to form
Eventually tried other means to repair area with omental flap, HBOTherapy, ….. without success. Have just recently 3 weeks post op for bladder removal and have ideal conduit with stoma.
I’m a bit confused as -is the plan to reverse the urostomy if the bladder heals? I had so much damage I had no choice. Al

The urostomy will not be reversed. The bladder was left in and I was told it would heal and shrink. I am worried about this but we had a great doctor from Mayo who seemed to think this was the correct procedure. Fingers crossed. Still having some bleeding but nothing like before. He said it would take time to heal.

@lcathey, it's a couple of weeks (almost) later. Has the bleeding slowed or stopped? How are you doing?
