Tymlos and Vitamin D

Posted by marymj7 @marymj7, Dec 30, 2023

My new lab work shows a big drop in my vitamin D levels since I started Tymlos. Has anyone else experienced that? Five months ago, before I started Tymlos, my Vitamin D level was 54.4. Now my level is 30, after being on Tymlos for a little over three months. I'm wondering if the drop is just due to less sunlight in the winter, or if Tymlos impacts D levels in this way.

Are you taking supplements? Of course winter can be a factor. Early on in my Tymlos treatment I read that Tymlos "eats" Vitamin D. I took 3,000 units a day and my level of 52 stayed the same. To get back up from 30 you would need to try more I guess, at least in the short term. My gummies are D3 as well as D3 and K2 (45mcg) so I take two D3 and one D3 and K2, 1,000 units each.

I am taking a total of 2000 units in my supplements. However, I had to drop one of the supplements several days prior to bloodwork, as it also contains biotin, which would interfere with my P1NP result (which I haven't gotten back yet). So I was taking just 1000 units in the three days prior to the blood draw. I also thought I read somewhere on this site that Tymlos "eats" vitamin D, but I can't find any information of that nature when I google the question. Thanks so much for your help. I think, in any event, that I will up my supplementation to 3000 units. I take Dr. McCormick's OsteoStim and OsteoSustain.

Serum levels of 1,25-dihyroxyvitamin D have little or no relationship to vitamin D stores. They are regulated primarily by parathyroid hormone levels, which in turn are regulated by calcium and/or vitamin D and most dramatically by the injection of PTH.
Your test results may be influenced by the timing of your tymlos injections in relation to the testing.

In vitamin D deficiency, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D levels go up, not down.
Just to confuse the situation.

@gently I am confused! I will say I made sure to do Vitamin D tests before I did Tymlos 🙂

I had a huge drop as well about 4 months after starting Tymlos. I asked my specialist who explained that Tymlos does affect vitamin D levels by converting d25 to d12.5. I certainly don’t understand the mechanism but my vitamin D intake was increased to 15,000 iu/d. He said that my vitamin D level should be between 45-50 and it had dropped below 20. Best to repeat every 3 months

My Vit D intake was high before starting Tymlos. My endo adjusted my Vit D, B-Complex, and B!2 intake before starting Tymlos injections 16 months ago. Since then Vit D levels are within the range.
