Time to Recover From Diverticulitis

Posted by rr1967 @rr1967, Jan 24 9:20am

Hello. I was diagnosed with mild diverticulitis last Thursday via a CT scan at the ER. This is my fourth bout of this and second in the past 1.5 years. I was not put on antibiotics as the treatment for my previous bout led to CDIFF. So my question is if I am not taking antibiotics, how long will it take for my diverticulitis to heal? I do not have a fever and the pain has subsided to these random twinges here and there. I have been following a low fiber diet since last week . (yuk..) My gastro doc thinks that I am progressing as expected and I have an appointment with my primary tomorrow.
Thank you!

Hang in there. I chuckled at your “yuk” about a low fiber diet. It sounds yummy to me because I live every day planning my fiber intake so the medication-caused constipation is mitigated at least somewhat. Six cups of salad a day, Benefiber, fiber gummies, and more is my reality.

Low fiber to me means whipped potatoes and ice cream and Mac ‘n cheese, white bread toast, and pudding - all the yummy stuff 😁

I would like to know as well. I am currently recovering from a bout of diverticulitis in which the antibiotics caused me to get CDiff. I was wondering how I would be treated if I have future bouts of diverticulitis. I think they push antibiotic treatment too much. My last bout of diverticulitis wasn’t bad and I didn’t run a fever, but they still wanted me to take antibiotics. So tired of it all.

I, too, have had diverticulitis, treated with antibiotics.
To your point of using antibiotics for a flare-up, I had severe cliff 3 years ago. My pcp consulted with an infectious disease doctor about future use of antibiotics, her recommendation was when needing antibiotics, use along with vancomycin to hopefully prevent another bout of cliff. Since vanco seems to be the gold standard for cliff. The way it is prescribed for me is as a way to prevent it.

My spell checker changed cdiff to cliff, sorry.
