Tight band feeling 2 years after total knee replacement

Posted by pradke @pradke, 3 days ago

Two years after 2 total knee replacements, I still have a 360 degree tight band feeling 3 inches above and below my knees. Every step I take feels like my knees are blocks of cement wrapped in tight rubber bands. My CRP is 23.1 and ESR is 44 indicating inflammation/infection somewhere. I had a course of 5mg prednisone, which did nothing. Three Orthopedic Surgeons claim my implants look good and my extension and flexion are fine. Yet every movement feels terrible. Help!

I hear ya. It's a year and a half past my hip replacement and I am still a cripple. I use a cane, I take painkillers. It's especially frustrating because antibiotics will make it all go away. Of course they tell me that antibiotics aren't the way to go, but it was sure nice to have several months this summer without any pain and total movement when I had a few bottles of amoxicillin. Yes, they checked me for infection, said there isn't any evidence of it. But nevertheless, my hip is acting as if it is infected and responds wonderfully to amoxicillin or keflex. I feel there's stuff they aren't telling me. Yes, I have seen a second surgeon. I am doing all the stretches and taking shockwave therapy as recommended. But I am still suffering.

pradke, Hi there. I'm wondering if your knees need aspirating. I have not had knee surgery, but, when they
fill up with fluid from so much arthritis, I feel like inner tubes are around them. Its harder to bend them.

The fact that you took prednisone, (although it's a wonder drug short term) could have caused fluid build up
because prednisone causes fluid retention.

If you are due for a followup, I would ask them to check my knees for fluid retention. It is nothing to
having fluid drawn off your knees. My doctor numbs my knees up first and almost always gets fluid
off them every 12 weeks. I can walk better and bend them better. Just a thought!

Blessings & Prayers..

Keep at it aaronhurts!!! Visit 5 doctors if you have to!! There is a reason why an antibiotic is making your hip feel better. The doctors just need to figure out why. Try writing to NIH. I know that health advice is not easily squeezed out of sources other than our primary physicians, orthopedic types, but someone somewhere has the answer!!!! Keep digging! 🙂 d.

Dear Pradke - As I suggested to aaronhurts, KEEP DIGGING! Some people go through hell, contacting many doctors until they get an answer. That' what we have to do today! Be your own advocate. Someone somewhere knows the answer. I found your post helpful, because I experience that tight "band" feeling in my legs below my knees that extends to my ankles and feet. It all started with Statins, but I am 3 months free of statins and still the feeling in my lower legs, ankles and feet persist. I will find out why if it takes me a year!!! Best of luck to you. Knowing the "Why" of things help us deal with them better. My opinion. d. 🙂

It has been 2 and a half years since my TKR and I still have the tight band feeling 24-7. But Just yesterday I was in the bathroom took a step and my knee collapsed on me for no apparent reason. After a few minutes I was able to put some weight on it and walk very gingerly. Nothing seemed out of place and today it is less sore and I am walking on it. The last time this happened to me was last March meanwhile I have worked very hard to strengthen my quad and stretch my knee with a range of 105. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY REASON WHY MY KNEE WOULD COLLAPSE FOR NO APPARENT REASON? No one in the medical field has given me any insight.
