Thyroid Surgery - Scar massage and care, adjusting Levothyroxine dose.

Posted by ripley @ripley, Sep 12, 2023

I recently had thyroid surgery; the remaining half of my thyroid was removed due to several nodules. (Half was removed 20 years ago). Looking for advice on scar massage to reduce the formation of scar tissue, such as low many minutes a day to massage, techniques used, and how many months to continue? Also, how did you and your doctors determine your new dose of levothyroxine? Six weeks after my surgery, my dr will check my TSH and Reverse T3. Is that enough?

@ripley I have no knowledge or experience regarding massage for scars post surgery (sorry). I do know a bit about thyroid medication dosing after thyroid removal. You said that your Dr will be checking your labs. This will help determine appropriate thyroid medication dosing for you. This usually takes some time and adjustment. It is often not a “one and done” thing. Think Goldilocks. It is worth it to take the time to find “just right”. Even then there can be changes and adjustments over time. My husband’s thyroid was removed about 15 years ago and he has experienced this. Can you speak to your Dr about your concerns regarding your thyroid medication dose? Perhaps you can also inquire about massage pertaining to the post surgical scar.

I always insist on my free t3 and free t4 being checked. I have found a direct link between these numbers and how good I feel. TSH alone is to broad a number to dial in to feeling my best.

Thank you for your post! I’m having my thyroid removed next week, and I’m concerned about getting my levothyroxine dosage right as soon as possible!
I want to avoid the mood and physical fluctuations while I am trying to find the right post-op dosage!
You remind me that I need to advocate for frequent labs afterward, in order to arrive at optimal dosage!!
