Problems months after colon resection surgery: What Helps?

Posted by joyce1 @joyce1, Feb 25, 2017

Three months after colon resection I had a severe stomach cramp this morning and have not had a bowel movement yet. This is the first time this has happened. So far things have been good.

hi, 3 month is still a relatively short time and you body is still adjusting to a major operation, I am nearly 12 month from left hemi colectomy and resection , and still get some discomfort and sometimes bloating on left side , but scans so far have come back as everything is clear and ok. I have also read on here people who are experiencing this longer than 12 months . so I presume everybody is different and our bodies all recover at different rates... well thats what I am telling myself...

Jesus mate, I'm very sorry you've been through all that! May I ask your age? That's quite a lot if sh*te to go wrong with repeated surgeries. What caused the leak? How did they address it? According to my doc that is something I don't need to concern myself with as I've never had any type of abdominal surgery.

This was my experience too - even though I didn't feel I needed the stool softener even 4 months post op, it makes all the difference in the world.. not sure how long we should be taking it though - is this for life now??

From my research it can be taken daily. My doctor told to take everyday for bowel health because bowel obstructions can reoccur.

Thank you for the warm invite. Definitely will consult with doctor. I had to reflect on changes I intentionally or unintentionally made to my diet and lifestyle that maybe impacting my healing. One change I unintentionally made was not taking my daily stool softener with Linzess. I restarted that regiment and feel a noticeable improvement. I also changed my eating habits. Eating at 9 am and again between 3&4 pm. Nothing after 4 pm. The pain has almost vanished. It’s one section around the mid to lower stomach area on left side that’s somewhat tender and slightly painful. I will give it a few days since its only been a few days making changes. Again thank you for sharing your thoughts and suggestion.

@tazjess23 - I can see how exhausting this must be for you. It sounds like a serious infection. Is he being treated at home or in the hospital? Having Crohn’s doesn’t make it easier. Wonder if it’s a large abscess that could be drained?

Can I ask what type of infection you had and what type of symptoms you had when you had the infection did your outer body swell because my boyfriends outer body is swelling like on the right side in his back around what appears to be the kidney area it’s really hard to touch it’s really hard for him to move it’s hard for him to do anything it started in his leg with the pain and he wasn’t able to move his leg but the antibiotics that he’s taking until he gets his CAT scan results which she doesn’t get until Wednesday and probably no answers until Friday he’s just in so much pain and it looks like he’s got another abscess in his body again after he’s already had one removed because there’s just no way that this lump is just from swelling😢😭

@tazjess23 - Welcome to Connect! I’m so sorry to hear how your boyfriend is suffering.
Is he home or in hospital? Do the doctors know about the fevers? If not, let them know at once. They probably have to do a CAT scan to see if anything changed. Again, having fever now is not good- help him get in touch with his doctors.
There could be something going on causing both the pain and the fever.

I don’t know if my messages are going through but I wanted to clarify he had an abscess Not a cyst That filled up with fluid that caused an infection that he let go on for very long and they had to cut it out and that’s from the doctor convinced him to get the resection surgery because his intestines were twisted near the bowel The Crohn’s disease needed to be taken out and the resection would help cure the crowns disease and during that process he had his appendix taken out as well. He thinks that there might be another abscess in his body collecting fluid and he scared and he thinks that he was lied to about the surgery and that his quality of life is not going to get better and he’s very depressed

I am so sorry that it’s taken me so long to get back to you. Between work having a daughter going back-and-forth to his house in my house I’ve just been literally exhausted. He has a CT scan on Wednesday. He has a huge infection his whole right side of his hip into his back is swollen I thought it might’ve been his kidney I’ve never seen anything like it it’s hard to touch it’s really swollen I don’t know if it’s from his surgery I don’t know if it’s an infection that wasn’t cleared up due to his surgery. He had a cyst that was carrying fluid for quite some time that was trapped in his stomach before he had the resection done there was no cancer found they removed the cyst tested the fluid inside of it did the resection took out his appendix, he’s had Crohn’s disease for over 15 years and he is just been dealing with the pain and the constant infection and the doctor convinced him that the surgery would make him a lot better and have a better quality of life it’s not even been a full two months he’s had his surgery since December 7, 2020 I’m sorry if there’s any misspelled words I’m running on barely any sleep. He’s had antibiotics and in case there’s any infection he is continuing to take them until after his CAT scan to find out what this mass is that’s very hard to touch and causing him a lot of pain and unable to walk for any long length of time, he’s able to go to the bathroom he’s able to keep fluids down but he’s always nauseous and barely wants to eat today was the first day he had ate anything in three days because I took him food after I got off work. I will keep you updated and I appreciate everybody on this site more than you guys ever will know. Has anybody any type of similar problems I don’t know where the swelling is coming from it’s not coming from his incision it’s a totally separate area and it looks like it could be swollen from the kidney around the side of his right hip area..it’s just bad. I have been able to keep the fever down with Tylenol keep the swelling down with Ibuprofen but the ibuprofen only takes the pain away in the leg the pressure so he can walk a little bit but the swelling around the right hip and the lower back by the kidney area it’s just really hot and hard and swollen I put an ice pack on it yesterday for 15 minutes and he said it numbed it, but when he got up to use the restroom he said that it was very painful for him to walk and he didn’t know if ice was good for it so he chose not to put the ice back on but I always thought that ice was good for swelling. I don’t know I will keep you updated. Anything that you think I should know would greatly be appreciated.. I will try to get back on in a couple days❤️
