Problems months after colon resection surgery: What Helps?

Posted by joyce1 @joyce1, Feb 25, 2017

Three months after colon resection I had a severe stomach cramp this morning and have not had a bowel movement yet. This is the first time this has happened. So far things have been good.

I switched to miralax but you may want to speak to your doctor. I’m sure everyone handles fiber supplements differently. I’m also more on the constipated side so I have slowly been getting off of it all together and it’s making me feel a lot better and I take a stool softener as needed.

For me, I think the pain is trapped gas plus some nerve pain above the main incision. Metamucil seems to work but that also makes you bloated. I'm hoping to get closer to normal soon. But I have good and bad days.

I’m 5 months out and feel much better now than at 3 months. 3 month mark was tough. I still get bloated and have pain but drinking water (a ton) along with understanding what food cause me pain has made a big difference and more healing time. Even at 5 months - certain foods kill me like anything raw (salads), dry and crunchy or fried. I did change my fiber supplement last month and the bloating has gotten better. Hang in there!

Hello i’m 38 years old and had a resection done due to diverticulitis grandfather, father had the same issue surgery was on december 3rd 2020 and about 1 month after felt great normal again but that last 2 weeks after that very sharp pain pulling pain doctor doesn’t know why the pain is all day can’t sleep without pain killers i’ve done CT ,ultrasound, blood work ,urinate, fecis and nothing doing pancreas test tuesday not expecting any issues blood work was good. I thank you guys for the tips for feeling better and I have one for you the pill is called Tributine I’m not sure it’s available here in the usa my friend bought it in Colombia the pharmacist recommended it. Good morning. It is early days for your healing. Although, I remember after my resection thinking “Is it over yet? I should be feeling normal by now”. I was told the same thing. It’s been a little over a year and I have learned what my body likes and not likes. I remember I suddenly hated anything sweet. Chocolate was out 😫. Maybe your experiencing gas buildup?gas pills might be a help. Maybe eat smaller meals more often. Stay away from raw foods. Certain foods for me would be hard to digest. Adding metamucil will help with your digestion and elimination without making your system overwork. These were my experiences after my resection. If it persists, getting your doctor’s advise is always a good idea. There’s a learning curve and it takes time and experimentation for each person. These are things not always learned in medical school and this site (for me) has been helpful in figuring it out. Keep at it! virgo52

For me, the four month mark was magic - big changes and was able to start returning to normal and no longer thinking about it. At three months, I was definitely wondering if my life had changed for good. Now I'm spinning (cycling) again for 15 minutes of a normal workout and can eat most things without too much issue. Was kind of a light switch change, all of the sudden. I noticed that what seemed to coincide with it was a sudden loss of a lot of swelling too - potentially has to do with my lymph system finally reconnecting enough to drain effectively?

Anyway, have faith - you'll get there!!

Hi, yep maybe you’re right, it’s just that after eating on three occasions I get really bad stomach pain that lasts for hours. Could just be the new normal I guess, initially thought it was indigestion but we’ll see

hi, 3 month is still a relatively short time and you body is still adjusting to a major operation, I am nearly 12 month from left hemi colectomy and resection , and still get some discomfort and sometimes bloating on left side , but scans so far have come back as everything is clear and ok. I have also read on here people who are experiencing this longer than 12 months . so I presume everybody is different and our bodies all recover at different rates... well thats what I am telling myself...
