TENS and Heating Pads for Prostatectomy Recovery
I had RARP recently and recovery has gone well. I was able to remain very continent after the catheter was removed and felt I was on the way to recovery. But then I got a urinary tract infection. The accompanying bladder spasms drove me nuts. I got a bladder retention study done to make sure there was no blockage and had cultures and a urinalysis. I was put on a course of Cefdinir antibiotic. Thankfully it feels like the infection is gone.
When spasms started, I was desperate for relief. My urologist prescribed oxybutinin which helped a bit but not enough. I tried two muscle relaxants, Baclofen and Zanaflex with the later helping the most.
In searching for other treatment options, I ran across literature mentioning the use heating pads and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) for both bladder spasms and post prostatectomy recovery. Given that I've had 11 joint surgeries, I had a TENS unit at home. A search of literature showed placement of electrodes at either the ankle or lower back. I can say that when combined with the medications, I got better relief when using heating pad and TENS.
Has anyone else used TENS or heating pads for post prostatectomy recovery? Maybe as part of physical therapy? If so, please share your experiences.
