Taking out the knee

Posted by paknght @paknght, Jul 24 8:33pm

I would like to see if anyone has experienced this circumstances. I had a knee replacement a year ago. since then, I have fallen and torn the ligaments in my leg around the knee. I have had two surgeries to correct this with no success. I an now told that at my age (80), that will never heal. What doctors want to do is put rods from my above my quad muscle to my calf and take out the knee. I don't think that I will be able to bend down to tie my shoes. When I walk, whether by walker or cane, if I do not lock leg I will go down because of no connecting ligament. I am afraid that I will be using a walker for in a wheel chair for the rest of my life

Have you gotten a second opinion on the condition of your knee and possible options to repair it? I think you should talk to another Orthopedic doctor.

Looking into this now. 8 weeks out post-op.
Maybe I’m too inpatient but it seems it shouldn’t give me pain when I walk.
My ROM is pretty good. I’ve been diligent in PT 3x/wk, exercises at home, bicycling…
Just can’t walk comfortably.
I used to climb hills and walk 10,000 steps a day.

This sounds like a horrible option- get a second opinion. 80 is the new 60 these days. You sound like you have a lot of life to live.
Best wishes.

You need to see another doctor who specializes in knee surgery. Search for doctor who is not affiliated with the current doctor.
