Surgery options: Is laparoscopy ever used for lumpectomy? Savi Scout?

Posted by cjketts @cjketts, Jan 21, 2023

Is laparoscopy ever used for a lumpectomy? I have a 5mm dcis tumor that I'm now scheduling for a lumpectomy. My surgeon is going to use a Savi Scout during surgery to locate the tumor. I was told the incision would be approximately 3 - 4 inches so the probe could be used and for removal of the tumor. Is this standard treatment for a tumor that is less than 1/4 inch? I am thankful for the early detection, but was wondering if there's a better way.
Thanks,

Mine was 7mm and had standard lumpectomy plus lymph note removal. My surgery was at Moffitt Cancer center in Tampa. Instead of the Savi Scout I was part of a study that used the EnVisio smart clip. I don’t see that technology discussed on these boards

I'm not sure what type of surgery which included sentinel node testing. I had on 12/20/2023. My tumor was 4 mm in the upper outer quadrant. I have 2 incisions that are about 1 -1 1/2 inches long. I had full rotation of my arm the day of surgery. I am sure that the type of surgery and the length of the incision is dependent on the location of the tumor. Keep asking questions and get a second opinion if you aren't at peace with the process.

I had surgery on 12/30/2022 for Atypical lobular hyperplasia with micro calcifications, located in the upper outer quadrant. My doctor used Savi scout and the incision was around the areola.

That sounds like a big scar for a little cancer. On January 20, I just had a bi-lateral lumpectomy (one of the few who was diagnosed with small cancers on both sides - stage 1A - each was 8mm). They used Savi Scouts on both and my scars are about 2 inches right around the areola. The incisions under my arms for the sentimental lymph nodes are slightly bigger and more troublesome and taking loner to heal.

I had my lumpectomy on Jan. 30, 2023, and the incision seems quite large considering they were looking for a 5mm tumor. I’m guessing that tumor size has nothing to do with incision size. The good news is I received my pathology report yesterday, Feb. 1 2023, and the margins are clear with dcis being 8mm from the closest margin.
Another result that has me puzzled is that the tumor size was measured at 2mm in the pathology report and not 5mm from the mammogram. Is this normal? For the previous 6 months I had been trying active surveillance while taking anastrozole for high estrogen. My mammogram in Dec. 2022, showed that my tumor had increased from 4mm to 5mm which convinced me to do the lumpectomy. Had I been told it was 2mm, I would still be doing the active surveillance.
I’m thankful that the dcis is gone, but this has been a really difficult and challenging time with all of the unknowns. My surgeon now wants me to discuss radiation therapy, even though I’ve had the test that says I’m at low risk! When questioning the surgeon, her response was "That's just the way dcis is handled."

Has anyone had this device (Savi Scout) placed for their breast cancer lumpectomy? Its been 24 hours and I just developed sharp intermittent pain in the area of placement. I was told I wouldn't even know it was there. I won't be able to reach anyone until tomorrow. I just read it shouldn't be used if allergy to nickel, which I have.

It must be the allergy. I had a “SmartClip” placed in my tumor the week prior to my lumpectomy. It uses GPS technology to guide the surgeon. I don’t remember having pain after the placement.

I also had 2 savi scouts put in and only the needle hurt for a minute. Hope your pain fades. At least the scout will come out during surgery.

I had one placed recently and did not have any pain, it did twinge a bit, like a pins and needles kind of thing but no pain. Hope it improves soon.

@pamelafay, did you have to have the Savi Scout removed? How was the pain resolved?
