STOP! Don't do this if you have osteoporosis
I am starting this thread hoping people will post things they've done that they have regretted, for one reason or another, when suffering from osteoporosis.
I'm going to start the conversation with a list of things we've learned already, and we are newbies!
1. Lift objects heavier than recommended by your physician (for my husband, that means nothing heavier than 5 pounds right now, with 3 fractures).
2. Don't bend at the waist! He got a fracture bending to empty the dishwasher.
3. Be cautious when driving - avoid rough roads, bumps, and go very slow over speed bumps.
4. We had planned to go on a boating tour (on a commercial fishing boat) on the ocean. After seeing a boat rocking and bouncing over choppy water we decided not to go.
5. Do not slouch when sitting in a chair or couch. If you're going to rest for any period of time on a couch elevate your legs (per our physical therapist).
6. Do not try any exercises until you have cleared it with your doctor, especially before your doctor confirms your fracture is stable.)
Please add to the discussion. I think this could be useful to people, especially people new to this.

Hi Isabelle7,
Thanks for starting this discussion, I am new to Osteoporosis too, so I din
I don’t have anything to add to your list yet, but I appreciate the items that you have on your list and I will be watching for new additions to your list. My PCP said after my Dexa Scan -“ You have Osteoporosis- You need to be on medication to rebuild your bones.” I have Kidney disease and I have read that many of the osteoporosis drugs are not safe for Kidney patients. So I am trying to rebuild my bones with Exercise, good diet and Vit. D and Calcium supplements. I am watching for a REMS Echologht Bone scan to come to my area (Southern Calif) since you can safely have a REMS scan frequently, which may be more accurate in regards to Bone Density than a Dexa scan.
I am in southern calif. Newport beach. I would like a REMS scan too. Last I checked with DEXA a year ago, I had osteopenia. The REMS scan is what modality? Thanks
@health seeker77 I have chronic kidney disease and most osteoporosis drugs are fine for kidneys. Reclast is the one that is problematic. My doc did a low dose with one hour IV hydration, slow infusion and tylenol and my kidneys are fine. Forteo, Tymlos and Evenity do not affect kidneys (though kidney stones are a possibility with the first two, though rare).
If your osteoporosis is mild it is understandable to try a "holistic" approach but if it is more severe, I hope you will try medications without fear for your kidneys. Probably not relevant since you were just diagnosed!
@isabelle7 I think a distinction needs to be made here between people with mild osteoporosis, people with severe osteoporosis and people with fractures- recent or stabilized.
There are safe ways to do some of the things you listed 🙂
My integrative medicine doctor has instructed me to include K2 with vitamin D for effectiveness. Look it up and se if it makes sense to you.
@healthseeker77
I hadn't heard of the REMS scan. Something to check into for sure.
I'm sorry about your kidney disease. Do you have an endocrinologist? Ours is the doctor who has been the most helpful with osteoporosis (my husband has it, caused from taking prednisone for two other non-related conditions PMR and GCA.) Also we get a lot of good suggestions from our physical therapist which we actually see virtually because of our schedules.
Have you checked into Forteo? If you were to take Forteo, it would need to be followed by a drug like Reclast or Fosamax. I'm not sure how any of those affect the kidneys.
Good luck rebuilding your bone through natural methods. I hope you're successful!!
@windyshores
I agree with you. I should have indicated that those things are especially troublesome when a person has fractures and are severe. Is there a way to edit a post?
I'm glad you responded to @healthseeker77 since you have experience with osteoporosis meds with kidney disease.
@windyshores
I read over my original post and hopefully people will realize I'm saying the things we've learned and that they can check with their own doctors for their particular situation.
cmdw2600 - Thank you for your comment, the Vit D3 I take also has Vit K2 in the recommended proportion- although the recommended proportion seems to vary among practitioners.
