Spinal Bone Degeneration w/Lumbar Radicuelopthy Therapy Treatment
I am seeking help/guidance on behalf of my elderly mother. Currently she is going through Lumbar Radiculopothy Therapy from a compressed nerve involving L4-5. She is dealing with multiple bone/spinal conditions that are worsening , currently she is wheel chaired with little to no mobility below the waist . It's going on a few months with minimal progress. I am concerned on everything from diagnosis to treatment plan . There is little attention & therapy taking place from local medical experts . I believe a second opinion is critical , seems to be a complex situation. I can supply more in depth details as well , any kind of suggestions/help is more than appreciated .

masenoble, thank goodness you are there to intervene. More details would be helpful. She does need at least a second opinion, maybe third and fourth, probably not local. Do you have her MRI CDs and any doctors' notes.
Information on the other spinal conditions would be helpful. If you don't have the CDs you should order copies. More than one because you should send them out. Bless this struggle with luck.
I had a pinched nerve l4 l5 stenosis and spondyliosis. I had a laminectomy which carved out space between my L4,L5 to enable me to walk as the pressure and pain on my left leg was extreme. They would not do a spinal fusion due to my osteoporosis which in hindsight now was a blessing. Forteo I am on speeds bone growth which has help me heal. I now believe I will not have to have a spinal fusion as the pain from the pitched nerve has been relieved. I did get, second, third and fourth opinion . I suffered for over 3 years before making my final decision. One Dr just wanted to mask the pain with gabapentin and painkillers which did not work and I did not do two others said my only option was the spine fusion. The fourth doctor said to give me quality of life he would do the laminectomy and then after my osteoporosis improved and I had been on Forteo for a year. He would look again at more surgery if needed. The laminectomy was a one day in the hospital and out. Not much pain. You wear a brace for 6 weeks. The pain relief was instant next day! I hope this helps. God bless
I had FOUR opinions. My last was my hero and the surgery was phenomenal. My nerves are permanently damaged because the other doctors were stupid or lazy. But, I got my life back with my Orthopedic surgeon who I worship. There are so many things you didn't say about your mom's condition so its impossible to offer anything specific other than check around. With the knowledge you get you'll acquire the ability to know what to do!
Second opinions can never hurt. You didn’t indicate how old your mom is but “elderly” for me at 73 means in their 80’s or older. If she’s been wheelchair bound for a long period rehabilitation therapy (PT) can help to an extent. If she’s debilitated she’ll only be able to accomplish so much due to her age and therapy may be painful for her as well. Please make sure your desired outcome from PT her expectations too.
She is 69 , she went a saw a new PT last week and was evaluated thoroughly . They said she needs to continue PT with a neurologist at a specific center due to involving more neurologic factors. She will be going for an overall second opinion this week as well .
She will be going for a second opinion this week , and we have some progress with new out patient PT as well .
She was initially told Surgery is not an option, and PT & Radiculopothy Therapy were the routes to take along with Pain Management .
She has other associated issues that are mild to moderate including , Osteoporosis , Spinal Stenosis , Scoliosis , Arthritis, and she suffered a fall about 8-9 years ago which left her with central chord syndrome. She had to do PT after surgery for the fall and lost 50% of mobility below the waist. She thankfully was able to regain limited mobility eventually and could function comfortably to an extent.
Any suggestions or advice on helping & supporting all this while at home ? Like natural supplements , & positions to avoid & movements to address ?
If she’s homebound and cannot leave her house without assistance she may be eligible for visiting healthcare (nurse, PT, OT, HHA). Both the visiting PT and OT can evaluate the home situation for her safety and make recommendations. Speak with her PCP or geriatrician who would need to order the services. I wouldn’t call a 69 y.o. female elderly, just my 2 cents.
