S/P stress fracture in foot still symptomatic

Posted by sb4ca @sb4ca, Dec 18, 2024

I had a stress fracture to a metatarsal in my foot. I was already at about 6-7 weeks by the time I went to the ortho and it was pretty swollen but evident only on MRI-not x-ray. The ortho said if it was a stress fracture he wouldn't expect swelling that late in the game. Now it's more than 9 weeks and I either got another injury or this one has not yet healed. It is still slightly swollen and in the same area though I can get a shoe on. It's more the nerve pain that bothers me and it's much worse at night waking me up. I dropped my laptop from my lap on that foot a couple weeks ago and I have to wonder if this injured anything too. I should add that I'm incredibly lean so there's not excessive weight on it. The question is even if I did get another minor fracture or injury, would they do anything different? Any input or advice? Thanks

sb4ca, I personally would think they may would put you in a boot to get the stress off of the bone.

I fractured the sesmoid bone in the bottom of my foot in 1983...I know this is different that yours. I worked at a large hospital and saw the sports medicine orthopedic doctor. He said I had a stone bruise. Three months later, I'm still hurting. He did a further exam and found out I had fracturedthe sesmoid bone in the bottom of my foot. I was in a cast for about 6 week and that took care of it....not fun to be casted in the hot summer time. He was amazed that it healed. He thought he was going to have to do surgery. Much prayer went into that foot recovery and God took care of it.

I pray the same for you. Blessings & Merry CHRISTmas to you and yours. Keep me posted.

I fractured my fifth metatarsal in 2018 and it was a clean break. My foot quickly became very bruised and swollen. I did see an orthopedic doctor who had me use ice, elevate my foot and put my foot in a boot and gave me crutches when walking/standing for about 6-8 weeks. It did hurt for a while but it finally healed.

You may need to stay off your foot more, ice it and elevate it to help it heal. If swollen and painful, you may want to use Motrin or another NSAID. They can inject with a steroid to help with swelling to reduce pain and aggravated nerves.

You can try Voltaren gel and nerve pain creams on your foot, too, to help manage your symptoms while healing.

Funny I specifically said I was hoping to get a cortisone shot but he put that down right away. My break wasn't as bad as yours which makes even less sense why it would still hurt with swelling this far out. Thanks for your comments and suggestions.

That brings back memories. I knew I had broken something in that foot a long time ago when I was jogging. I hit the curb in just the wrong way and now I recognize it was the sesmoid bone(s). I'd totally forgotten the name. With the shoe, he was very wishy washy about the whole thing. Probably because I was so far off from when I first injured it-at least 8 weeks after the MRI and follow up appt at that point. Honestly according to what I've read, it should have been healed or close to it. I had to ask him what to do about it, and he looked at my shoe and was weellll hmmm. We could put you in a shoe but Medicare probably won't cover it. At that i assumed it wasn't really needed. We talked a bit and he said I need a shoe where my foot couldn't flex much. So I said well I'll look at the Medicare-won't-pay-for-it-ortho-sandal. The assistant showed me the sandals and I'm like no way am I going to wear those if I don't have to. My god the foot wouldn't even been covered and here we are in winter. So I got a pair of boots that have a sole exactly the same as the ortho sandal did. By now, I'm realizing I have pain and swelling in the original area which is far up my foot but also in the area I dropped my computer. I called to make an appt yesterday but they had closed early lol. You too have a very bright and peaceful holiday.
