Information about applying for Social Security Disability Income
I was recently able to qualify for social security disability payments. I had a PET scan show metastasis on my hip. Metastatic PC falls under the Social Security Compassionate Allowances (CAL) program, which makes approval easier and faster. I was originally told during the interview that it would take only weeks for approval based on my condition. It took about 4 months with several calls, but the average is 9+. But once approved, they provide back pay to the point of disability (less a 5 month waiting period). Now that chemo is over, I am just on ADT. Just wanted to pass on if helpful to anyone, particularly the younger men that don't yet qualify for SS.

2 ReactionsMy husband's oncologist team started all that and it was maybe 4-6 months and then I do think we got some back pay too, what surprised me was that we have two minor children in the house and they got some too, plus once they found out I'm a homeschool mom/ stay at home mom, I got some too, in total the 3 of us get half of what my husband gets, Right now it covers the insane cost of Obamacare for this year! plus copays....
After 2 years on disability the insurance will switch to the state medicare/ medicaid whatever it's called.
Also if you're stage 4, the booklet said they don't really do many "checks" on you, like if a person is temporarily on disability, they only check if the person died! Geez! (Though I think a funeral home often notifies the state of that- they did when my in-laws passed away in 2024, which was 6 months before my husband's diagnosis)

6 ReactionsThat is good news! I applied for SSDI, was encouraged to apply by my PCP. Stage 4 lymph node metastatic cancer. Extreme fatigue even before starting Lupron. I was told by Arizona Dept Economic Security at the time of application that my case looked like an “automatic”approval based on medical records. I qualified for the compassionate processing and with 2 months they had their decision. To my surprise and my doctors surprise I was denied. I am now in appeal, but there’s not much more I can tell them or provide them in terms of medical condition. Stage 4 and it’s just getting worse. from what I can tell, this decision is an outlier. My doctors can’t figure out why I was denied.
