Small Intestine Bacteria Overgrowth (SIBO)

Posted by jacque6977 @jacque6977, Feb 22, 2017

My wife, after years of suffering from debilitating nausea and fatigue, has finally been diagnosed with SIBO as confirmed by a hydrogen breath test. It is estimated the bacteria has had at least two years to grow and may be well established. She has started on Xifaxan, at $35 per pill, but it is estimated that elimination of the SIBO may take up to six months. Her day now starts with her waking up with nausea and when she has a cup of tea and toast in the morning she gets sick within fifteen minutes thereafter. Her sickness is accompanied by violent belching, and at times she regurgitates liquid vile. The only drug she has for nausea is Zofran which does nothing for her. Are there any other SIBO sufferers that are experiencing the same symptoms, and what are you taking to reduce the nausea?

You might want to see a functional medicine doctor. I have been seeing Dr. Kyle Pankonin, a chiropractor who practices functional medicine. He is in Lamberton, MN. It would be quite a ways for you to drive, but give him a call, he might be able to refer you to someone closer to you. His phone number is507 752 7650. Found issues that weren't tested with regular doctor. Thyroid issues for one. Gut issues resolved as well. It takes time and focus to get to the root cause of what you have going on. We are not a one size fits all. Don't let any doctor put you in a box with everyone else. You are you.

Did you take antibiotics ? Which ones ? How long?
Herbal treatments?
Which test did you do to know you had SIBO?
Thank you!

I took a breath test for the SIBO diagnosis. It tests the gases you exhale after a day of bland diet and then a dose of lactulose in the next morning. I exhaled methane which indicative of SIBI-C. I took Rifaximin for two weeks but it did not cure it. Helped with the nausea but not much.

I am about to try Rifaximin with Neomycin for two weeks to see if that can knock out the unhealthy bacteria overgrowth. You can get MUCH CHEAPER Rifaximin from online Canadian pharmacies. Perfectly legal. Have not tried herbal treatments but might some day. I have started using Nature's Secrets Colon Cleanse which is producing small bowel movements at the moment. It does not feel like a stimulant more like a prokinetic formula. Hope that helps.

Kefir is good for sibo according to some doctors while others say bad bacteria may grow. It helped you. So glad.

Alka-Seltzer helps my nausea. Pepto too.

This was written a few years ago. The alka selzer is an nsaid and it a suspect along with statins with me developing microscopic Colitis. I now only take very sparingly the UP brand acetaminophen from target. Pepto (UP brand 5 symptom) gives me nervous spells.
With celiac always be on the lookout for other diseases. Don’t blame everything on a celiac spue diagnosis.
Celiac is easy colitis is a beast.

I had the same symptoms . My awesome GI put me on the Low FODMAP diet and I tested + for SEBO so went on Refaximin. Just starting another round of Refaximin after doing great for almost two years. For more info and APP for low fodmap diet go toMonash University web site. The low fodmap diet SAVED MY LIFE as I was slowly starving to death. We were terrified and the doctors were coming up with nothing until I got to see my new GI. RD Kate Scarletta has a great web site that is a life saver too. All the best.

I was on lowFODMAP for over a year in the beginning when they had just lumped me into the IBS net. Did me no good and in fact I continued to get worse. Fast forward to now and we think its Methane SIBO-C. I used to have a variety of stool dysfunctions, but now it is down to the constipation. Just finished the Refaximin, and just starting on going the herbal route. I research like crazy, and found a couple studies that artichoke leaf and ginger improve motility so starting those. Also starting Allicin and Berberine and hoping like crazy it works.

Sorry. Just diarrhea. Can you get a second opinion? Sounds like more is going on.
