Sleep problems after urostomy

Posted by bagman @bagman, Jan 28 9:33pm

Three weeks ago my husband had a radical cystoprostatectomy, bilateral pelvic lymph node dissection and construction of an ileal conduit. His recovery has gone well and we are experimenting with various brands as advised by this discussion group (which we have found to be very helpful, thanks). His main problem is getting a decent sleep interval. For a while he slept in a recliner and used the Medline 2500 liter night time bag we had in the hospital. He would like to try sleeping in the bed, but is a restless sleeper and has found the tubing isn't long enough for him to move around. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

I would think that the various bags have different lengths to their tubing, You can always purchase extra tubing lengths which fasten on to the original bag with a suitable connector.

I had that problem for a while too. I hung the overnight bag in a small plastic trash can and sat the trash can on a step stool. That gave the additional length for "turn and toss" overnight. As long as the bag/trash can are lower than the bed, gravity will do its thing. I strongly recommend the trash can even for quiet sleepers. If the bag leaks for whatever reason from manufacturing defect to us not closing the stopper correctly after emptying, the mess of a leak will be contained in the trash can.
As far as bag, I thought the Medline to be of lesser quality than Bard Urinary Drainage Bag 154002. Remember to get the correct adapter.

@piki Thanks, I'm exploring the internet and did find Hollister had extra tubing lengths.

Most companies offer extra-long tubing.
I'm 14 weeks out, and I am still sleeping on the recliner. When I do switch to the bed, I will miss my phone, glasses, and cup of ice water that sit next to my recliner, as I don't have any furniture next to my bed. I will have to figure something out. I am sure it's something to get used to.

@bagman, how is your husband's sleep quality? Did you find a solution that helped so he can sleep in bed?

@colleenyoung thanks so much for checking on us! Jim is able to sleep in bed now that his abdomen is healing. He is still adjusting but getting longer periods of sleep. Hearing from others who have faced these issues is very helpful!
