I had a sigmoid resection Sept. 4th for one polyp that looked cancerous. Removed that and 9 lymph nodes and everything was clear. Going in to see the surgeon tomorrow as I have a lump and pain near the incision. They think I might have a hernia now. I sure hope not.

1 ReactionI had a very large pre cancerous colon polyp, discovered during a colonoscopy. It was too big for the doctor to remove. He said that resection surgery used to be necessary but now, in many cases, has been replaced by EMR (endoscopic mucosal resection)--a non-invasive procedure which, from a patient perspective, seems much like a colonoscopy. Fortunately, my provider--UCSF--has a doctor who specializes in EMR--not every facility does it. It was performed on an outpatient basis and the large polyp is gone with no side effects. It may not be appropriate for all cases, but it's worth exploring and asking about.

@brownsf that would have been nice, but not for me. They could not be sure that it hadn’t progressed into the tissues or the lymph nodes. I am glad it’s all cleared up. Good to hear your surgery was much easier.
I have IBS and Diverticulitis. I am having colon issues for months now but I don’t know how to proceed with this as the last time they were doing a colonoscopy it was not successful as I have too much scarring from a hysterectomy and they could not get around the scarring. I have had a virtual colonoscopy before, though I can’t remember why. Because of all this I don’t know how they could look for polyps. Anyone with these types of problems?

1 Reaction@a2025 just adding to my own post. Seen my surgeon that Sunday and he looked at the CT Scan. The lump I am feeling is where the 2 sets of stitches meet up. It will hurt as things tighten up or if I stretch too much.

2 ReactionsHello @spazcook51 and welcome to Mayo Connect. I see that several members have already posted with you about their experiences following sigmoid resection surgery. Here is a list of all posts on Connect that discuss this type of surgery: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/.
You will see that various topics are discussed, including the type of diet you should follow after the surgery. I want @linda82 to post with you, as she had resection surgery because of diverticulitis. What are your main concerns as you prepare for this surgery?
