Shot day after infusion

Posted by asolidrock @asolidrock, Sep 9 2:52pm

My white blood cell bottomed out; had to be hospitalized to get my WBC count up to "normal" range the dr ask if I had a shot the day after to boost my immune system. I told him no. I guess my question is: are you supposed to get a shot the day after your infusion.
Thanks

Generally yes--an injection of Neulasta the day after a chemo infusion keeps your white cells from tanking. It is possible that the failure to give you this injection was due to insurance issues if you are in the US. Unfortunately, some insurance companies won't pay for the injection to be automatically given after the first chemo infusion--they wait until after the patient has a crisis causing febrile neutropenia that requires hospitalization. This happened to my husband in 2016. After the initial crisis, he received Neulasta the day after every chemo infusion. NOTE that he was not yet eligible for Medicare, so I don't know if the rules regarding prophylactic Neulasta injections are the same under Medicare. Be sure to ask for Neulasta after all of your subsequent chemo infusions, and ask the hospital doctor to put notes to that effect in your chart if possible.
