Severe neuropathy pain in leg after hip replacement

Posted by gbny1224 @gbny1224, Jan 30, 2023

Any one have severe leg pain 12 hrs a day everyday that nothing helps not even laying down. Its so bad you wish for a heart attack. I also have a few flare ups that I moan and cry for about 10 mins each day. This is so awful 😖 . I have a titanium implant the Dr. Went in and said it was a mess he cleaned it up and removed the cobalt chromiun part and replaced with more titanium . The neuropathy completely went away just a few burning spots in a week then 3.5 weeks later the neuropathy came back much worse can't sleep now use to be able to I have more fresh titanium in there and now large screws. They all think that's never a problem but it's gotta be related having a reaction to something in there. The Ti cup and Cobalt chromium liner were right next to each other in my hip. Going back to him for follow up next week. I'm using the pain pills from after the surgery to sleep that won't last. Lyrica does nothing. Also these meds all have titanium in them !

Hello @gbny1224. I am glad to read you have an appointment next week where I hope you will get answers and a plan started.

It sounds like you think you may be allergic to titanium? If so, do you plan to ask for testing to confirm?

Good morning @gbny1224 . May I ask how long ago the Chromium/Cobalt components of your hip were removed? And whether they were removed due to shedding metal ions and elevated heavy metal levels?
Your description "the Dr. Went in and said it was a mess he cleaned it up and removed the cobalt chromiun part and replaced with more titanium" sounds very much like what several of us on the group have experienced. Mine was over 10 years ago, but I remember it so clearly because first I was ill with many symptoms and no diagnosis. Then the metal levels were found, and the ortho surgeon described my tissue as "lumpy gray oatmeal." The metal ions had caused bone, muscle & nerve damage and a very long recovery. So, having 2 metal-on-metal hips, I went throught revision twice in a few months.
The good news? Once the tissue healed, the muscles recovered and the nerves regenerated, with lots of PT, I was pain free and able to go on. Even the neuropathy in my foot healed. The main, lasting, unpleasant artifact is a tremor which is gradually becoming worse.
So there is hope for recovery - but it takes time and work. I was in PT for 6 months - land and water - to get everything running again.
Oh, and do you have a second metal-on-metal hip? If so, you need it screened for problems too, to get that heavy metal out of your body.
