Right hip replacement with left necessary

Posted by wolfie313 @wolfie313, 2 days ago

I’m recovering from a full right hip replacement. It’s been about 2 months. I am 50. When I went in for my consultation it was noted that my left would eventually have to be replaced as well. We believe both hips were affected by heavy doses of prednisone during age 12-14. I’m doing well in my right “surgical” hip recovery and PT but now suffering a lot with my left. Has anyone else gone through this? I’m trying to do all of my PT and return to “normal” but it’s so difficult when I can’t trust my left hip.

@wolfie313 I was in the same situation at about your age, but mine was from erosive osteoarthritis. I think when both hips are affected, it is fairly normal to see a big change in the unoperated one after surgery. You have stressed it more by relying on it in recovery, and also probably changed your gait once the new hip began to heal.

Is there a reason to delay replacement of the other hip if it has become unstable? I had second one replaced less than 3 months after the first - not the best timing, but a great relief to be out of pain.

I actually wore out my left hip while waiting 2 years to find the right insurance and doctor who was skilled enough to give me a right hip resurfacing. It’s a shame I didn’t get a hold of you before getting the hip replacement. The resurfacing procedures Have been great for me. At only 50, you would have probably been a great candidate. Although, resurfacing is usually suggested for athletes who wore out their hip joint from high impact activities. There are actually professional baseball, hockey, and tennis players who have continued to play professionally with resurfaced hips. I lasted 6 years before having to get the left hip, but I believe I wore it out when I waited 2 years with a bone on bone right hip. I am still playing baseball at age 57 with both hips resurfaced.
As far as your left hip situation, listen to your PT. All of the right hip stretches and exercises may help strengthen your left hip and give you more time. When it is time for a second hip, you will be fine. Plus, you will know what to expect as you will have already experienced the procedure and recovery. Good luck!

I would also mention prp or stem cell injections for anyone considering replacement. It doesn’t work for everyone and isn’t covered by insurance but certainly worth looking into.
I’ve been told my left shoulder needs replacement but I’m about to try prp injections.
