Reversal of Statin-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy

I am curious to know how long intermittent peripheral neuropathic of tingling/burning/sharp or shock-like sensations in extremities and less in torso and face after stopping a statin medication may take to subside? Medication (atorvastatin) was taken for about 16 months and symptoms of neuropathy started about 4 to 6 months ago but have been more pronounced in the past 6 weeks.

jhkenn97, it can take months, even years, but at least it isn't considered permanent. My internal medicine doctor talked about COQ10 supplements as well as creatine and vitamin D, best to make sure with your doctor if those supplements would be ok for you. I hope your nerves heal quickly.

@jhkenn97 How do you know that your statins caused the PN? I haven't heard of any diagnostic tests that can pinpoint the root cause of PN. I will say that it may be coincidental that my own PN started about the time that my Primary put me on it for slightly elevated cholesterol.

Good question. I'm on it about a yr, re lower cholesterol. I already had PN type symptoms, so not like yours there, but would want to know too. If you get some info can you pls share it here? Take care. !!!

Glad you asked this because I had just sent in request to my cardiologist to wean me off the atorvastatin for this reason.

I’ve had severe idiopathic axonal Polyneuropathy for about 20 years that was progressing slowly. Since being put on statins 2years ago my PN has progressed from using a cane to go out to using a wheelchair. My legs feel like they’re incased in lead stockings and my muscles have atrophied to where I’ve taken several bad falls- It’s not particularly painful thankfully, although I’ve been on LDN for years which may make a difference.

I’m hoping I might get at least some amount of healing back because it feels like I’ll eventually become paralyzed. Going off the statin is worth a try.

It would be great to hear from anyone out there who developed statin-induced neuropathy and then weaned off the statin and saw their neuropathy diminish or even disappear. I would certainly be willing to trade a higher cholesterol for an end to this maddening pain, numbness, and buzzing that plagues me almost twenty-four seven.

Wonder what your cardiologist will
recommend. It does seem connected by how you describe the change. I hope they'll find a path back to you being more mobile. What is LDN? Does it reduce pain? I really hope your Dr's. can help you out. Take care. Air hug..!!

I was on 2 different statins for 13 years. I changed to Repatha. It lowered my cholesterol even more.

How did you discover that was the cause of your numbness?

I had lower back and buttocks pain. Pain specialist ran an EMG. Test results indicated neuropathy. This was July 2024. At that point I had no numbness, buzzing, or pain in my legs.It was around that time I was put on statins. Around December I noticed some odd feeling in my feet. A month later there was some in my arms. In early 2025 pain showed up in my feet and back of legs.
So, was it the statins? Who knows?
