Reglan withdrawal
Hello- I’ve been on 5 mg/3x day for about 5 weeks and then lowered to 2.5 mg twice a day for a week but the side effects were so bad, I just have to stop now. I’ve been taking it for Gastroparesis.
Has anyone had withdrawal effects from stopping reglan? What have your experiences been? How long have your withdrawals lasted?
My side effects are fast heartbeat, chills, sweats, extreme dizziness, anxiety, diarrhea, vision was getting blurrier the longer I was on it, yesterday I had head pain and one side of my face went numb so I knew I didn’t want to take another dose. I’m seeing the doctor on Tuesday.

I was in on Reglan 5mg twice/day fir 9 years. I did not have withdrawal symptoms
You’re really fortunate. 😊
Hello, I was first diagnosed with gastroparesis about a year ago. I started reglan, low dose like you and tried to wean to less. Then in Jan/Feb I had cararact surgery and after that the reglan quit working and I became ill again. I was still on reglan, but agitated and felt like I had so so much brain fog. Now I am on a trial of 2 weeks on 1 week off but my cognitive abilities are just about gone. I am not functioning anywhere near what I used to. I have agitation, like you, cold and hot, tremors, small muscle control not working very good, my vision is terrible and my ears are plugged. Everyday I am a little worse than the last. All this doesn't include the digestive issues. Lost about 15 pounds, was starting at 100 so this is a huge amount. Weak, very very weak.
I am sorry I forgot to mention the dizziness and rapid heart rate. Also now my breathing is difficult.
Thank you for sharing so much!
Thank you for sharing too- it helps to know we’re not going through this alone. It’s pretty horrible- and there’s not much information online so it’s hard to validate these symptoms. I’ve experienced cognitive decline as well, and the weight loss. I’ve lost about the same amount- maybe up to 20 pounds now. I’m only on day 3 of being off the Reglan - do you experience any small improvement at all when you go off for a week? The only thing I’ve seen get a tiny bit better is the dizziness- it was gone yesterday but it came back today.
Right now I can’t say I noticed too much, the agitation is very bad and I spend my days pacing and resting. I’m exhausted but miss being able to think and problem solve. Small muscle motor skills seem to be lost also. Daily habits like flossing teeth are extremely difficult with so much lack of coordination . I don’t read about many who are having these conditions. I also take remeron. It feels like I’m having drug side effects
Thank you
You’re having really severe side effects! My GI NP today said I’m never getting back on reglan again after this.
I know how it feels to pace all day and be agitated- I started taking Benadryl just to get some relief during the days. Also, are you working with a psychiatrist? They could prescribe something to help get you through this period.
I miss my life, too. I just lie around feeling awful staring at the ceiling and panicking. This is no way to live.
Can I assume you are woking wit a psychiatrist? My GP gave me remeron and ativan to help with the anxiety. Do they think this is a mental issue? I know it is stress related but gastro seemed to happen first then the stress and anxiety. Or is it to deal with the anxiety. Not sure what is going on really. I know I'm really stuck with stress and how I feel because it consumes me. My ears are also plugged though I have mild hearing loss to begin with but the plugged ears don't help. Then my eyes are another story. Had cataract surgery Jan/Feb and have so much trouble seeing or focusing now. I think I mentioned all that.
thank you, so much
