Reflux sensation from thyroid med

Posted by davepolian1 @davepolian1, Nov 4, 2022

Wasn’t sure where to put this question. I started taking thyroid medication for hyperthyroidism, four days ago. The last couple of days have been awful. I keep getting a sensation coming up my throat. Not burning or painful, just something “different”. Not sure how to describe it.

The medication is methimazole 5mg. I looked up side effects but this wasn’t a common effect. I’ve only been on it for a few days so I decided to take break for a day or two to see if the sensation subsides. The other possibility is it is reacting with my Nortriptyline 50mg medication. I guess I’ll wait and see what happens. Anyone here take this medication? Does it subside eventually? Tank you

@davepolian1 Good morning - Welcome to Mayo Connect, where we try to help one another with our shared medical experiences. I am sorry for the late reply, but it has been over 10 years since I used this medication, and I hoped someone with a more recent experience could help. My hyperthyroidism went away after the underlying cause was corrected, so I only had to take it for about a year.

I was instructed to take it with a small meal or snack (not just liquid) then wait a little while to eat. That seemed to work for me.

Maybe you could try that?
Sue
