Reclast - when to start Tylenol and Claritin?
I've read in several places , including here, to prep with Tylenol and Claritin before Reclast. Ok, so I have my infusion tomorrow and I'd like to do as much as I possibly can to help with side effects. Some folks are reporting they took Tylenol and Claritin the day before. I kinda see taking the Claritin the day before, but why the Tylenol?

I took Tylenol 1000 mg one hour before my infusion. I did not take Claritin. I had no problems with the Reclast Infusion.
I did not take Claritin and took Tylenol only when I did develop a fever. I was told that hydration and a slow infusion (one hour) were the most important approaches.
But chances are most, 30-40%, will have an "acute phase reaction" the first time, with fever and fluish symptoms. For me, similar to after a flu vaccine. For most of us it lasts a few days and is no big deal. It tends not to happen with later infusions. My second one was fine.
Thank you. I am hydrating a lot :-). The nurse at the infusion center said she would stretch out the infusion time and push a bag (?) of saline afterwards. I will take the Claritin and the Tylenol Fingers crossed.
The infusion went fine but the side effects are kicking in. I honestly think I've done everything I can - hydrating like crazy, Tylenol and Claritin. I'm sore all over, bones ache, muscles in my legs and back hurt. And it seems as the hours go by, the pains increase. I'm trying to rest. I do not plan on leaving my home til this goes away. Any suggestions are welcome 🙂
@255anny it is semantics but I do not consider what you are going through to be a "side effect" but instead a "reaction," specifically an "acute phase reaction." For me it was similar to what I go through with vaccines. For most of us it goes away quickly: I was sick 2-4 days and not entirely better for a total of 5. Keep us posted!
How long was your infusion?
Actually I was talking to sweet patient in a chair near me, so I lost track of the time. But I think between the actual medication and the saline it was 45 min to 1 hr. I know they were aware I had asked for a very slow drip. Maybe I didn't get it. This reaction is way stronger than what I have to a vaccine. Those never bothered me much at all. Looking at the hot tub outside and thinking, maybe that would help.
@255anny sorry you are suffering! I remember taking a hot bath even though I had a fever. It helped. Tylenol helped. Staying in bed and watching movies! It is miserable but it doesn't last and chances are it won't happen the next time. Apparently 40% of us have this reaction!
My Reclast infusion took 15 min. Talk about rush. Also try ibuprofen with Tylenol and Claritin. Helps a lot. I had my infusion 3 weeks ago and still feeling the side effects. I'll be happy when they are all gone.
Here's to hoping your reaction will fade away very soon. And you can have a Christmas pain free. I cannot take ibuprofen - Diverticulitis! My GI Dr told me never, ever take it. And actually my Endo Dr said the same regarding Osteo. But I honestly don't think taking a few would hurt. But I won't take a chance. The Tylenol seems to be helping me. I slept a few hours last night so I feel somewhat human this morning. But the effects of the Reclast are there!
