Reclast repeat?

I had Reclast for two consecutive years several years ago. Can it be resumed again?

@bethieb I know a few people who had Reclast infusions a few years ago and then resumed recently. What does your doctor recommend?

I do not have an answer. But could you please share if you had any adverse side effects on Reclast?

I was a little achy for a day or two but not even enough to keep me for normal activities, including exercise. The infusion went smoothly. I highly recommend Reclast.

I meet a new pcp in June and will ask. My former pcp didn't mention it one way or another. I assume it's fine to take a break and start over but need to be sure. Thank you for your info.

Hey @bethieb

I had my first Reclast infusion circa 2011 and my most recent infusion in July, 2024, without any complications. I believe I’ve had perhaps as many as seven infusions 2011-24, but no one can seem to scare up all of the records…there may be more.

In the span of 2022-24, I also did the Tymlos/Evenity routine. Nine months of Tymlos was like poison to me, but Evenity was smooth sailing.

My current rheumatologist recommended Prolia as the next weapon of choice, but after actually listening to my opinions, agreed to one or two additional Reclast doses. The biggest rap is that good old “spontaneous femur fracture” which doesn’t scare me as much as Prolia.

As an aside, I did at one time have five annual infusions followed by a few years of a drug holiday.

Best wishes to you as you take your next step. Cheers!

Thank you! This is so very helpful and reassuring to me that I can continue with several more Reclast infusions since two previous ones were a few years ago. I appreciate your reply.

I am having my first reclast infusion in May. May I ask how your dexa scans have changed or remained the same throughout your treatment? I am very concerned about adverse reactions, but posts like your make me feel more positive. Thank you.

Before Reclast, my dexa scan had gone the prior year from osteopenia to osteoporosis. My PCP did not advise any medication other than vitamin D3. When I went this year to my gyn, he was not happy/shocked that I wasn't taking osteoporosis/osteopenia meds. He suggested Reclast. My PCP then agreed (I'm still puzzled by his initial response to the dexa scan), said he couldn't prescribe Reclast and referred me to an endocrinologist. The endocrinologist recommended Reclast. I'll have another dexa scan this summer and Reclast. My PCP said he fully expects it to show osteopenia rather than osteoporosis. We'll see. I hope so. Besides walking 10,000 steps/day, I'm strength training 2-3 times/week, taking 1200 mg calcium, either food or tablets, taking 1,000 IU D3 daily.
I don't hesitate to take Reclast. I'll do whatever it takes to strengthen my bones.

I have been on Evenity and will try reclast next. Fingers crossed.

I am relieved to see some positive comments about Reclast. I took Alendronate for 5 years with only minor issues the day of (which lasted literally a few seconds and was gone). I have been on a drug holiday for 1.5 years, during which my numbers have tanked. Forteo is out because I had a terrible reaction to it years ago. Prolia is out as well, as family members who took it reacted poorly. So the endocrinologist has recommended Reclast because I did well on the Alendronate. Reading some of the side effects experienced on any of the osteoporosis drugs is enough to send you to an asylum! Thank you to those who have shared a positive experience. I feel better about beginning Reclast after reading these posts.
