Reclast prep - water, electrolytes, Tylenol ...?

Posted by 255anny @255anny, 1 day ago

Hello everyone! I am scheduled for Reclast Nov 20. Scared to death! I've been reading and reading ... Water? Just how much? Double, triple what I usually drink - which isn't a lot but I do try. Electrolytes? My Dr casually mentioned Gatorade. My thoughts are that there might be better options that that. I do have electrolyte supplements I can add to water. But I've read to very careful with those. Also Tylenol, starting when? Claritin? I'd love to read your experiences and what worked for you.

255anny, if you decide on a longer infusion time with dilution it's best if your doctor prescribes the change. Then the administering center can't refuse your request and they can schedule your extended presence. Best wishes, gently

@255anny my infusion nurse told me the IV hydration was the same as two big cups of water. Not very precise but the main message from her and my doctor was actually to no overdo the hydration. I have kidney disease so it was more crucial so I had IV. Nephrologist said to hydrate with something salty. Instead I ate salty things and drank water then the IV had saline

In addition to hydration you might ask for an hour long infusion vs 15 minutes. It is gentler. Glad @gently mentioned getting everything you want to be ordered by your doctor!

I didn't take claritin or tylenol until needed. First time got a bit of a fever and took tylenol that night. Nurse said see if it is neededd!

I did ask the Dr for the longer infusion. At this point I don't know if she noted that on the order or not. Since there is a shortage of saline, I doubt I get that as well. I did ask the infusion center about it when I spoke with them 2 days ago. They can only use the amount needed for the mixture (?) Sooo, I'l hydrate and try to do it smartly and not overdo it.

I understand your fear with your upcoming infusion; I was the same way. It was recommended I drink a lot of water , you asked how much; I recommend between 24 to 32 ounces prior. Also, you will need to drink water after the infusion. I took one 8 hour Tylenol prior to the infusion, that’s all I needed. Everyone is different so you may have to see what works for you. The first infusion I had flu like symptoms for about 6 hours, but then they passed just as fast. My second infusion
, I didn’t have any side effects. I have had my bone scan and my BMI index improved substantially. I share this with you just to let you know the drug did work for me and I was scared to take it. As a matter of fact I refused to take it for two years until my bone scan showed a continuous loss of bone mass. I have taken two infusions now and the numbers improved. I hope this helps.

Thank you ... I am definitely having anxiety about this drug. But it's either Reclast or Prolia. Pros and cons with both no doubt. Did you hydrate the day before your infusion? And afterwards?

You can request a partial dosage. The doctor may not agree but should if he/she actually cares about patients.

255anny It doesn't help with your first infusion but just so you know the studies show that the likelihood of the flu like reaction to Reclast goes down a lot after the first infusion. I believe the studies conclude about 30-40% of people get those reactions on the first shot. So odds are in you favor of not having a bad reaction.
This is just from studies, I've never taken Reclast.
