Reclast or Fosamax After Tymlos??

In January, after two years on Tymlos, I will need to take a bisphosphonate to "lock in the gains," as my doctor says. I am not looking forward to this at all, given my poor teeth and the risk (albeit small, apparently) of ONJ. The choice is between Reclast and Fosamax. I've been researching the two in terms of ONJ risk, and it doesn't look like one is better than the other (both hang on in the bone for years, so the ONJ risk continues), although I did find a study saying that cases of ONJ occurred 1 year after treatment with Reclast and 3 years after Fosamax. Any advice/research you have found on this topic??? This is all such a nightmare!!!

You're practically on the same schedule as me. I have to stop Tymlos early next year, too.

The ONJ risk is very small. I plan to use Fosamax. One, I don't like the idea of an annual infusion. If I have a bad reaction, there is no turning back. It's inside me and it's not coming out. Two, I've read that you can take Fosamax for 1-2 years, then take a drug holiday. During the time off, you monitor via CTX blood test and DEXA scans. As long as everything looks pretty good, you continue the holiday. There's no ideal choice, but I'd rather do this than get an infusion.

Thank you!! That was kind of my reasoning, but my doctor was pushing for Reclast. I'm hoping that just one year of a bisphosphonate will be enough to "lock in the gains."

I took Zometa which is the exact same drug as reclast just 4 mg so a lower dose. I showed two research articles to my endocrinologist, and she then prescribed Zometa.
I did fine, it was two weeks ago.
I am 83, retired nurse anesthetist.

Thank you for this information, karenjaninaz!! A lower dose sounds good! Do you have links to those two research articles you mentioned? If so, please share them with us. Thank you!

Thanks so much.
-Is there any chance you might post the links to those articles?
-Did you do anything special to make the infusion go well?
-How many infusions does your doctor think you will need?
-Could you please share your doctor's name and location?
So grateful for your help.

sebutler, risedronate has the lowest impact. If you tell your doctor in December that you need dental work in January they might extend the Tymlos prescription to cover your treatment.

Thank you, gently. I had not heard of this particular bisphosponate. I'll research it a bit more and ask my doc. By lower impact, I am assuming you mean a lower percentage of patients getting ONJ, is that right? Yes, I could take Tymlos for an extra month.
