Reclast and gum graft
I am scheduled to get a Reclast infusion on 6/6 (I have osteoporosis in my lumbar spine -3.0 & osteopenia in my hips - diagnosed in February). I am 60 years old and I believe my osteoporosis was caused by my autoimmune thyroid disease. I have lost bone in my jaw and have one slightly loose tooth that I am treating with a invisalign & eventually permanent retainer. I was told by my orthodontist I need a gum graft near the loose tooth. I can not get the gum graft before 6/6. I am thinking I should get the gum graft over the summer and start my first Reclast infusion in late summer or early Fall. Thoughts?

I think you should confirm with your dentist. I don't believe anyone here could give you reliable information to go to the bank with. I also suggest calling the manufacturer to see what they say. You can also read all the available info on ALL the bone meds and their effects with dental work. I've had dental work on them. I've also had tooth/jaw bone problems with no thyroid problem, and so I'm not sure if what you are suggesting is "causal." Which is why I think you need to ask your doctor, the manufacturer, and look up the literature, for which there is a lot! Good luck. On a surface level, I believe, without knowing anything deeper, it is prudent to have the dental work and then start the bone meds (unless it is emergent for both). Good luck!
Whatever you decide, do the gum graft first. I do not think that bone recontouring is needed if it is a ‘free gingival graft’ - a small piece of tissue is removed from the palate and sutured in place over the loose tooth.
I would give it about 3 months to fully adhere to the bone before starting your infusion. FYI - I am a retired dentist whose wife has just been diagnosed with osteoporosis. Her doctor only recommended Tymlos or Forteo as they actually build healthy bone and most of the others do not.

Thank you! I will continue with my research - so much to figure out with osteoporosis.
Thank you for your professional opinion with my potential gum graft procedure. I am leaning towards getting the dental work done before I do the Reclast infusion too. I think I am looking for a reason to delay the infusion because of my nerves though - so, not sure that is wise. There is so much to figure out with osteoporosis.
