Recast infusion

Posted by annar @annar, Dec 23, 2024

I received a Reclast infusion, believing it would produce the least side effects of all the osteoporosis meds out there
All I can say is beware! It drained my potassium which led to my fainting and I have been in the ER three times in the 11 days since I had this medication. My acid reflux is out of control and my tastebuds are ruined. So eating is almost impossible. I lost weight of which I cannot afford since I was only 110 pounds to begin with. I’m so weak I’ve been unable to work.
I resisted treating my osteoporosis with any of the horrible side effects they all have. But what frightened into choosing something. I am so upset at myself for not listening to my gut and just going with diet and exercise. Doctors convince you that will die from breaking a bone. Well I feel Ike I am going to die from this treatment. I’m only 64 and feel 104 at the moment. Does anyone have any ideas on how to help get this poison out of my body faster?
I’m so mad at myself

The signs you are expressing honestly sounds more like Covid symptoms! Not saying the treatment isn’t the culprit but might have a Covid test to rule that out? I do hope you are feeling better by now! I often wonder the percentage of people that seek treatment, what percentage actually do not have any side effects and why our Endacrdnoligist is not more verbal about the potential aside effects!

@annar, thanks so much for posting. From my reading there isn't any known way to rid your body of Reclast. Some patients with extreme reactions like yours are given low dose steroid even as steroid can affect bone density. I have read that low dose steroid is less harmful to your bones than the inflammation you are experiencing.
Antihistamines would help with the allergic part of your reaction. Its usually tylenol for the pain, but you want to watch kidney function.
Though Reclast is said to stay on the bone for ten years, it doesn't continue to cause the effect you are experiencing now while it does continue to prevent fracture.

I do not have Covid. I also got diagnosed with acute lower colon colitis during this whole thing. Which I did not have. They tell you it’s better to take shots or an infusion if you have GI issues. Well these medications also made my Gerd 10 times worse. To be fair I am very sensitive to any kind of medication, but this absurd. My mom lived to be 95 and broke her arm at 95 and the only reason she passed was that they mistreated her break because they didn’t care because of her age.
Just want people to be aware. Thank you so much for your well wishes!
I was told that only 10 percent of patients experience mild flu like like symptoms for a few days.

I hope you right and these side effects will go away.
Thank you

@annar, I so understand how you feel. I did not have the positive experience that many others had either, and I will probably be recovering for awhile like you. I to did it for severe osteoporosis and hypercalcemia, my body literally is eating my bones. I know that unfortunately, there is no fast way to get the drug out of your body. Also, I would talk to your doctor about your concerns, or even a nutritionist. However, what I started doing was a cleanse for a month. I drank it every day multiple times a day, and for me, I think it started to give me the energy I needed to feel like I could function, and also joining this forum has given me other avenues to voice my experience, and listen to other peoples thoughts, ideas, knowledge. I completely hear your frustration, and know this is a good starting point to get others ideas and research what really will be good options for you going forward.

@annar being sick in a variety of ways is experienced by 40% of people who do Reclast, I have read ("Great Bones" by McCormick). You are still within the timelime for that "acute phase reaction." I had a fever and was in bed for a week or more.

This is unlikely to happen again.

If you are still having severe symptoms from Reclast in a month or so, let us know! Sorry your acute phase reaction is so difficult.

One suggestion: Low sodium V-8 is very rich in potassium. I take that, magnesium, calcium and Vitamin D3. My challenge is hydrating. If you can do it, that helps too.

I have several spinal fractures and they are most certainly life-altering and potentially life- threatening. They affect my GI, heart, lungs. Lots of pain and disability. If others have osteoporosis that is less severe, there may be other options to consider but meds are a necessity for some on this forum!

I’m sorry to hear that you also suffered. Luckily for me they found no spinal fractures and for that I am grateful. And while I understand drugs are necessary for many things we go through as human beings and we are lucky to have the options modern medicine has to offer. I feel that we as patients are sometimes ill informed of all possible side effects. I wish you the best on your journey.

I also forgot to mention that I am someone who did much research before choosing this option and did not find anything in how terrible the effects can be for some.

What I was trying to say @annar is that you may still be in the "acute phase reaction." I distinguish this from side effects that are longer term. I know that this reaction was common, took many forms, and could go on for 2-3 weeks. Since then I have had no side effects and my second infusion went fine. Just something to consider.

Reclast leaves the system fairly quickly:

"Zoledronic acid has a terminal elimination half-life of 146 hours1. The elimination is triphasic, with an alpha early distribution half-life of 0.23 hours, a beta half-life of 1.75 hours, and terminal elimination half-life of 167 hours2. Zoledronic acid is 39 ± 16% eliminated in the urine as the unmetabolized parent drug1. A complete response, when treating hypercalcemia of malignancy, to a single dose of zoledronic acid is typically seen within 4 to 10 days, lasting up to 3-4 weeks2."

After that I have been told it remains in bone to some extent and gets released over some years.

As we all know, Any Medication we take into our bodies, Always has some form of a side effect! It is also obvious that before treatment or medication, we should look it up and do an in depth search on its Pros and Cons before we have treatments! Just a thought! I know that I am not immortal and my day will come; just would like to enjoy a little before that day. I do hope you start feeling better and any side effects disappear!
