Radiation therapy effects: Can it cause brain fog & memory issues?

Posted by nole88 @nole88, Sep 15, 2024

Does prostate cancer radiation therapy cause brain fog or memory loss? My husband finished 39 treatments on August 16th. No real side effects during treatments. This past Thursday, September 12 he experienced transient global amnesia. CT and MRI were good and no signs of dementia. Has anyone had neurological issues after the treatments? If so, how are you doing? Did everything return to normal mental functioning? Appreciate any information. Thank you.

Avoid radiation. Get robotic prostatectomy.

Why is that

I have not heard of brain fog from radiation, but I did radiation and hormone therapy and had a slight brain fog for awhile. I finished treatments and no more shots and the fog has disappeared.

I echo jeffmarc comment that have never heard of this side affect.

Is your husband on any type of hormone treatment or other medication with his radiation? How is he sleeping? Is he worrying about his cancer that can affect him mentally. Asked your R/O or urologist about your concerns.

The type of radiation used now is no where close to the brain. Again not heard of this but please do not take that as a medical answer, asked your R/O and or Urologist.

Being diagnosed with prostrate cancer and going through extensive radiation treatments is very stressful. Some take the stress very well as others will have side affects both mentally (from the stress) and physically from the radiation.

You PCP, R/O and urologist should be monitoring mental side affects as well as physical ones. Luckily I very minor physically side affects and was able to keep exercising. Exercise has always been a stress relief for me and I think if that had not been possible I probably would not have handled the stress and worry as I did.

Thank you for your response.

I have never heard of radiation treatments causing brain fog or memory loss. I have been on weekly advanced prostate cancer online meetings for 5 years and no one has mentioned having that side effect.

If your husband was also given Lupron, fermagon or Eligard, which is frequently done, those can cause the problems you describe.
