Questions about radiation for prostate cancer: Can I drive myself?

Posted by paulcalif @paulcalif, Jan 31, 2024

Question to you who have been through radiation treatment for prostate cancer or have knowledge of the proceedure.
I'm considering some type of radiation treatment for my cancer. My main question is, will I be able to drive myself to and from?

We saw the radiologist at Mayo this morning. My husband is set up for a urological surgery to place a spacer between the prostate and rectum. Has anyone had this procedure and how long does it take to recover. He is also set up for a euroflow to check on any urine concerns. He is also set up for another MRI of the prostate before 5 weeks of ProtonBeam Therapy. Because the radilogist that did the biopsy said that it spread to the skeletol structure just outside the prostate, they are recommending 18 months of hormone therapy. Depending on how he handles it, it could be only a year. Jim was hoping not to have any hormone therapy. I know this hormone therapy is very individual, but can anyone talk about their experiences?

I had spaceoar inserted a week or so before my radiation. That was in December 2022. If I had to do it again today, I might try BioProtect instead but the spacer makes a difference in protecting healthy tissue. I was knocked out and had a spaceoar technician in the procedure room along with an anesthesiologist and my RO. I did not feel anything afterwards not even the full feeling some have afterwards.

Really a personal decision and should be based on what you think is best for you after doing research and talking to your doctors. I would always get a second opinion.

I did discuss the newer 5 high dose treatment being done now versus the 20-30-40 lower dose treatments. I had the 30 dose at UFPTI (proton beam). My EP stated that his research was showing some increased side affects with the high dose which you would expect. The main benefit for the 5 dose is TIME. The both have equal success.

I discussed this with my oncologist/radiologist at UFPTI who has been doing proton radiation treatments since 2006. He also stated the increased risk and statistics showing an increased in side affects with high dose.

Rossi at CA Proton won't have anything to do with the five. But I've also heard that with the 20 to 28 (hadn't heard about 30 or 40) your body starts to heal and then get blasted again giving
cells opportunity for mutation. Leaning toward the 28. Thanks Who was your RO?

I has Brachytherapy followed by 23 radiation sessions with no side effects at all. Hopefully he will respond as I did.

Husband will be having brachytherapy next week, to be followed by about 25 sessions of external radiation. Gleason 3 + 4.
