putting dental implants when you have osteoporosis

Posted by melia7 @melia7, Jan 5 12:18pm

My doctor advised me to fix my dental problems before starting to take the medicine ( bisphosphonate). As I lack several teeth, I need to make implants. I know that my jaws will lack calcium and I shall need injection of strengthening tissue. Still, will implant hold when there are processes in the body that eliminate calcium from bones? Ha anyone made implants with this diagnosis and how it has gone?

Why not get a partial plate? A couple of Mt friends did that

Well, you mean a bridge with crones? It is impossible as I lack teeth to fix it. I use dental prosthesis now but it creates a misbalance between left and right sides.

If you take Forteo or Tymlos the implants will have a better chance of integrating with the bone. Both drugs facilitate the process.
If those two drugs are off your list, you need to wait. Prolia, Evenity and all of the bisphosphonates can place a disadvantage on implants whether taken before or after.

Thank you proliamistake, you'll not know how many you've saved from a like fate.
Part of the problem with Prolia is that it was prescribed while so much was unknown. Clinical trials don't always pan out in the real world. The fate Evenity will bestow on some of us with osteoporosis will be on display years after its use. Hoping for the best, wary of the worst.

I just had my first visit with an Endocrinologist this week. Last year, a different doctor, an Orthopedic Surgeon, "highly recommended" Prolia, so I took one injection. When I learned more about it, I decided not to continue with the treatment. I told the Endocrinologist about the Prolia shot, she looked shocked and asked, "What was your doctor's rationale for giving you Prolia?" She went on to tell me that, though it may be the best option for some people, it should be a last resort. Knowing what I now know about the drug, her perspective makes me think that I may have found the doctor who is right for me.

Dangerous to play with bisphoshonates and dental work. I’d get dental work all completed A YEAR BEFORE STARTING! As I was told to do, everything should be healed by then. If you don’t have enough bone integrity for an implant your headed for failure. Someone I know tried and implant came loose and when tried to remove the base in bone it drifted into sinus cavity requiring specialized surgery to remove.

Thank you for your comment. May be you know if your friend who made an implant received before bone transplant (bone grafts) for bone augmentation? My friends who installed dental implants (but who have no osteoporosis) all received before bone grafts.

I need to have two teeth extracted due to resorption issues and then plan to have implants. I expressed concern to my dentist about my unmedicated low bone density, and he is not worried. Said he would prefer I not be on meds prior to the procedure, and he routinely uses bovine bone implants with everyone regardless. I’m sure there are many opinions on that, and it likely differs from person to person, but I found it reassuring.
