Prostox test: helpful?
Has anyone had this, and if so, was it helpful in making your treatment decision? Also how did you pay for it? I understand that it's not covered by Medicare. I'm leaning towards radiation for my prostate cancer, but according to many videos on the PCRI you tube channel, a small percentage of men have very severe and permanent chronic symptoms from radiation and Prostox can identify those men by genetics.

I know a few people who have had this test and some of them have had it show that they would have negative issues if they had SBRT radiation.
@jeffmarc
Jeff, does it apply for all kinds of radiation or just SBRT ?
@surftohealth88
It does evaluate risk of IMRT
It does not evaluate the risk of proton radiation
@jeffmarc
Thanks Jeff. We will ask for that test than 👍. Hopefully we will get an order.

Here is a link to an article talking about the UCLA team using the test:

As usual Jeff is correct. I was proscribed it by my Onocologist at Mayo Jacksonville when we were discussing SBRT. It came back saying there was a 95% probability I would have Grade 2 uranary toxicity after having SBRT. It showed only a 5% chance after IMRT. I’m still evaluating treatment options but I’ve eliminated SBRT as an option due to that test. Also Prostox called me and said that they would file it through my insurance and if insurance didn’t pay for it they would not charge me. I had them out that in writing and they did. Something about my Onocologist was participating in an early study I think. Anyways ai would call them and see what they say about charging you if your insurance denies it.
The ProsTOX test can be just for SBRT OR IMRT ($500), Both $900)
The base line of delayed urinary symptoms (> Grade 2 'RTOG') of months to years can be 5% LOW, to 15% HIGH risk. If I may reinterpret what the MO? meant or you may have misremembered: for SBRT you have a 95% likelihood of AVOIDING delayed urinary tract symptoms. because your ProsTOX came back LOW (< 5%) ? The acute post treatment side effects are the same and resolve in the same time frame. Like all tests the sensitivity and specificity counts. Some one wrote on MCC that the ProsTOX is in 75-80% range....?
