Problem with Chronic constipation

Posted by bb03 @bb03, Feb 1, 2021

I have a history of hypothyroidism, severe endometriosis/treatment was a hysterectomy 17 years ago.I also have a hx of IBS. My thyroid hormone levels are stable. I eat like a rabbit(I poop like one too, LOL!!!!!!). I eat a large amount of fiber and drink almost every hour(nonalcholic).ONly prescription drugs I take are armour thyroid and my estrogen/prosterone troche. I make a coconut bread and I add psyllium husks, flax seed and chia seed to it. I eat it practically every am. I also eat a spinach salad for lunch daily with nuts and yogurt and eat a lean meat and veggie and more coconut bread at night. I do one cheat meal with a cheat dessert once per week. I am relatively active for my age of 60. I've been to a gastroenterologist and we have tried Linzess which didn't help at all. I take miralax, and a Super Cleanse tab one per day which has herbs to soften the stool and to stimulate the bowel and It barely works. I am at a loss. I have not tried Montegrity yet. I don't know if it will be helpful and the side effects scare me. I had a CT of my abdomen and it was ok, no obstructions. The gastroenterologist that I go to practically accused me of abusing laxatives. I would be impacted if I didnt use the miralax and the Super Cleanse. Diet/water and activity do not help. I had diarrhea from my late teens to the age of 36 when my intestines out of the blue just shut down completely. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, I was put on Synthroid but the constipation didn't go away. So if there is any gastroenterologist out there that can help me, please let me know.I feel defeated and worry about my health.

Thank you. I will give it a try. I will also let you know after a few days how it is working.

Actually, upon rising, I like to have a cup of coffee and I seem to have to “go” after consuming only half cup. However, I must also tell you that since my last post, I have started to incorporate 1 tablespoon of Metamucil in 8 ounces of water twice daily and 4 to 5 ounces of warm prune juice in the morning with breakfast. Lots of water throughout the day. And some high fiber Fruits and vegetables, and even Chia seed In my shakes and flaxseed sprinkled on my waffles or pancakes.
Your cure does work, but I still find my stool to be hard and dry if I don’t do the above regimen.

Have fought this battle for 20 years. My experience is everything stops working if used daily so I do hit and miss. Have found laying on stomach before getting out of bed, doing some relaxed breathing and focusing on relaxing abdominal area very helpful. Apples, Raisin Bran clusters from Trader Joe’s with added Sunsweet prunes chopped and blueberries helpful. Physician Choice probiotics (Amazon) at times. Drink cold water upon waking 16 oz though I struggle getting that much. The cold water stimulates the reflex in gut. Few things I do daily- Magnesium oxide 400 mg at night + 2 stool softeners. Pepcid AC has some fast acting magnesium that definitely helps getting started. There are definite floor exercises that help move things. On YouTube. Begin to really tune in to slightest urge and go to bathroom. It sounds simple but extremely effective. Could keep a food diary. Akkermansia is another probiotic that people swear by. Use it as directed. My back exercises on floor have definitely been helpful. When all options have failed I go to Magnesium Citrate. Clear liquid At drug stores. Used to be given to clean out for colonoscopy I only drink 2-3 ounces. Takes about 6 hours.

Have the doctor prescribe injectable relistor. This is literally the ONLY thing that will allow me to have a bm, and usually if I'm backed up which I always am, I have a bowel movement within 5-10 mins while drinking my coffee, and before any food for best results.

My constipation is beyond dangerous and had to be hospitalized a few times to get the fecal Impaction manually removed which was not pleasant at all. I lived in hospitals for 4 years for pancreas issues which led to more gi issues, severe constipation is one of the most problematic things until I tried everything and than made a mix that finally helped me from getting constant Impaction.

My personal solution, the only solution is to take a colon cleanse every night, along with varying stool softners capsules depending on the trend of solidity of my stool. Then first thing in am I have 8oz of warm lemon water, followed by caffeinated coffee 2-3 cups, and inject the 12mg Relistor (which i dont build a tolerance to like any laxatives, or steal water that I don't have to spare bc I also vomit 10-20+ times daily) direct in my abdomen and within 10 mins I am in the bathroom like clockwork passing a large pile of stool.

I will say though, this is a complete last resort when nothing else works.

Hi there
Sorry you are having these issues. It's really tough and can affect every part of your life.
I've tried Motegrity and initially thought it was a miracle pill after decades of trying all other prescriptions for severe constipation, distention and pelvic congestion, however it only worked for a week. I don't eliminate without taking Senna, stool softeners and Ducolax... and those are working only once a month now. I prefer not taking meds but have been I've tried it all; Enulose, MiraLAX, every magnesium, stool softeners, laxatives, pelvic therapy, prunes, kiwi's, epson salt baths, Tens unit. Drs are unable to tell me the cause or diagnosis and removal of the intestines is recommended (even a decade ago). No obstruction, Sitz market test showed scatter throughout intestines (100% markers still there after a week).
I'm curious - has anyone had successful results of May Thurner procedure (stents placed in iliac veins) and see any results of increased bowel movements? Wonder if the improve blood flow is a positive outcome for paralysis of the intestines and if the two conditions intersect.

Hi Kitchen,
I haven't had the May Thurner procedure but I've had the Mary Thurner procedure. My
back was sore for a week afterwards.

Hi Kitchen,
You've been through it all. Wow.
I have what the Gastro guys call an "extended" colon. Longer than normal requiring more "push" to vacate.
I use Miralax in 4 ozs. of warm PJ about every other day and a lot of strain.
I eat a lot of meat. Fish, pork chops, prime rib and broccoli, shallots and green beans. Lots of steamed broccoli.

Good luck.

For the past year or so my rib cage area is like really painful the other day I had a small backache that radiated around to the front and I went to ER and they discovered which I have had problems before that I had backed up constipation so I have been taking MiraLAX Fiber supplement magnesium citrate stool softener, and I still have not evacuated like I should have a gastrologist a new one in a month. I hope I don’t explode before the month is over. Any suggestions out there?

I tried many many laxatives. I had a colonoscopy to make sure nothing was blocking my colon (that was unpleasant.) I took Miralax and it gave me incontinence of stool. The NP sorta gave up on me saying: I don't know what else to try with you. I stopped my headache meds thinking it was slowing down my stool. THEN: I made an appointment with my doctor and saw her assistant first. She said she made sure to take her thyroid med every morning before eating with a glass of water. BINGO. That was not my usual procedure. I just swallowed all the AM pills together before or after eating. Never thought it could matter. IT DOES. Now I take the thyroid pill every AM before any food. Am super happy I no longer have constipation.
