Pre Surgery Day-Long Appointment Worried About Dental Issues

Posted by babette @babette, Sep 26, 2019

Hi all - Well, I'm in the home stretch regarding my revision. I received the pre-surgery intake packet and it requires a visit to the dentist to make sure all is well re: controlling infection. I have had a broken tooth with a filling for years and it hasn't given me any trouble and another "crown in progress." Am afraid that I might need dental work that will postpone my surgery! Would really appreciate responses/experiences with this. Many thanks in advance!

@babette I’m sure that the work in progress will not be an issue, they are just looking for infections. If you are close to needing teeth cleaning and can schedule that before surgery you might want to, to avoid needing it too soon after surgery.

I’m really excited for you to finally be close to resolving the issues you have had to live with for too long.

Hi @babette - like @contentandwell - I'm sure they are doing everything possible to avoid any chance of infection. I agree with JK, go ahead and schedule your teeth cleaning. My OS asked me to wait 6 months post-op before teeth cleaning and even then to take antibiotics for the rest of my life prior to teeth cleaning. The crown in progress shouldn't be an issue, but the broken tooth might if there is a chance of infection there. Is there time for them to do an extraction?

@debbraw I'm all set to see my dentist next week, the day after my day-long pre-op visit. So I'll have a clearer idea of what needs to be done. And surely my dentist will know what needs to happen - my town is full of geezers with knee replacements! My concern about an extraction is that it may not completely heal by surgery day. I will keep you posted!!
